"With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts" - Eleanor Roosevelt

"Power isn't control at all--power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own."

The Central Valley Supervisor position for Fish and Aquatic Conservation in the Pacific Southwest Regional Office opened up on USAJOBS. Please help me get the word out by forwarding this announcement to potential candidates. Note that the closing date is Monday, November 28th. This is an interdisciplinary position (Fish and Wildlife Administrator, GS-0480-14), open to candidates with Federal status. You can view the USAJOBS announcement here: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/457034300/.
More about the position
The Central Valley Supervisor serves under the Assistant Regional Director for Fish and Aquatic Conservation, located in the Pacific Southwest Region, Sacramento, California. The Central Valley Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for several field stations and overall coordination for related Service field operations in California’s Central Valley and Bay-Delta region. The primary duties of the position are to provide direct supervision and administration of the Pacific Southwest Region fish and wildlife offices in California’s Central Valley, including the Red Bluff and Lodi Fish and Wildlife Offices and the Central Valley Project Improvement Act Implementation and San Joaquin River Restoration programs. Additionally, this position provides policy guidance, technical advice and ensures coordination of fish and water management operations among field offices, including those within the Central Valley that are not under the direct supervision of the Central Valley Supervisor.

The Central Valley watershed covers more than 40 percent of California and includes the drainage basins for the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and the San Francisco Bay (including Suisun and San Pablo Bays). The Central Valley ecosystem supports 750 species of plants, fish, and wildlife including several endangered and threatened aquatic species such as Delta Smelt, several runs of Chinook salmon, and green sturgeon. Two-thirds of the State’s salmon pass through Central Valley waters, and at least half of the Pacific Flyway migratory water birds rely on the region’s wetlands.

If you are looking for a cutting-edge, science-driven job where your leadership skills can produce mission critical results and directly contribute the mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, I invite you to apply for this this exciting position with the Fish and Aquatic Conservation Program in the Pacific Southwest Regional Office.

A little about the location
The Pacific Southwest Regional Office is located in Sacramento, California. Sacramento is in the heart of California at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers. With its Mediterranean climate, Sacramento is ideally suited for year-round outdoor activities. Within a two-hour drive, you can be at the ocean or your favorite ski resort, camping spot, or entertainment location. Housing remains relatively affordable and the property values are on the rise. The Sacramento region is home to 10 colleges and universities, including California State University at Sacramento and the University of California, Davis known for its prestigious natural resources graduate programs. San Francisco and Lake Tahoe are a two-hour drive. The National Park System’s crown jewel, Yosemite National Park, can be reached in less than three hours, as can the spectacular seascape of the Monterey Peninsula.

The summer months in Sacramento are sunny, dry and hot with high temperatures averaging in the upper 80s and lower 90s. During winter months the average low temperatures range in the 30s and 40s with high temperatures in the 50s and 60s. During most winters, we experience moderate amounts of rainfall. The Sierra Nevada range is cooler and can have heavy snowfall.
The City of Sacramento is home to the State Capitol, miles of rivers and river parkways, and North America’s largest railroad museum located in the Old Sacramento historic area. Bike, horse, and hiking trails traverse the greater Sacramento area. The 32-mile-long American River Parkway is one of the nation’s premier greenbelts. For water sports enthusiasts, nearby Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, the challenging rapids of the Upper American River, and the maze of waterways within the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta offer a variety of boating and whitewater rafting adventures.
