In 2013, the councilors of the American Geographical Society (AGS) created the AGS Council Fellowship to support graduate student scholarship in pursuit of geographical knowledge, and especially fieldwork. The fellowship is open to all student affiliates of the American Geographical Society, both Masters and Doctoral Students. Each fellowship is worth $1,500 and four will be awarded in the spring of 2017.

The AGS Council Fellowships Program will consider proposals concerned with any sub-field of geography. The program encourages, but does not require, a fieldwork component.

Andrew Dearing CEO of Boundless is
AGS Newest Fellow

The American Geographical Society (AGS) welcomes Mr. Andrew Dearing  as its newest AGS Fellow.  Mr. Dearing has been CEO is Boundless Spatial Inc. for the past year, and has brought the vision and deep geospatial background necessary to launch its open source geospatial software product line in to the mainstream.

“I am excited to join the ranks of the AGS Fellow community.  I was pleased to see the AGS endorse the GeoForAll initiative that has done so much to bring open source geospatial software, for educational and research purposes, to nations all over the world, with over 100 GeoForAll labs now in existence.  As an AGS Fellow, I am committing our company’s resources to advance geographic education and research, as well as the frontiers of geospatial technology and data, through the power of open source geospatial technology.  I am particularly proud of the leadership position taken by Boundless’ other AGS Fellows, Anthony Calamito and Brian Monheiser, in sponsoring the AGS’ Geography Teaching Fellow program and look forward to meeting the 50 AP Human Geography Teachers selected this year when I attend Geography2050 in NYC, November 17-18th."

Mr. Dearing has had extensive experience in the geospatial industry ensuring that customers’  priority business and mission needs are met with innovative and cutting edge technologies.  Before joining Boundless, Dearing worked at ESRI where he gained valuable insights on the development of GIS software, data management and spatial services.  In joining Boundless, Dearing has become a leader in the vanguard of the open source geospatial technology revolution, and has brought his considerable management talent to generating sustainable and profitable growth for Boundless.

AGS Chairman Dr. Christopher Tucker says of Dearing, “Andy’s commitment to geography and its advancement at both the local level, and on the national and international stage is inspiring.  He and his team are transforming the role of open source geospatial technology in how both enterprises and individuals tackle their pressing challenges.  The Society looks forward to working with Andy and his team as they further inspire the Geospatial Revolution in students, teachers and professionals of every kind through easy access to cutting edge, license free geospatial tools."
