Topic: Accommodating Trucks in Innovative Design Intersections and Interchanges Date/Time: September 21, 2016 1:00 - 2:30 PM ET Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm Description: In an effort to maximize safety, better accommodate bicycle and pedestrian movements, and/or optimize motor vehicle flows, various states, counties, and municipalities that build and maintain the roadway networks are constructing new types of intersections and interchanges. Many of these connection points are also being designed to better accommodate truck movements, either by minimizing the negative impacts trucks can create in poorly-designed intersections or by easing truck movements in high truck volume locations. This webinar will discuss the reasons why many different types of innovative intersections are becoming more popular across the United States, describe the state of the practice on how agencies are factoring in trucks and freight needs when planning and designing those intersections, and review on-going efforts in two states - Oregon and Ohio - that demonstrate how this is done within States at the program and project levels. Topics and Presenters: Introduction to Innovative Intersections (20 minutes) This presentation will provide an overview of the growing number and types of innovative intersections, highlighting a few of them and discussing the design details that are important for making them work for trucks and freight haulers. SPEAKERS: * Jeffrey Shaw, FHWA Office of Safety * Gilbert Chlewicki, Advanced Transportation Solutions Oregon's Efforts to Advance Freight-friendly Innovative Intersections (15 minutes) Oregon DOT continues to diligently work to seek balance in their transportation solutions - providing space for trucks to maneuver, expanding networks for pedestrians and bicyclists, and addressing safety performance. This presentation will discuss efforts in Oregon to bring different perspectives together to implement an approach that considers various user needs based on context. SPEAKER: * Hermanus Steyn, Kittelson & Associates Integrating Trucks into Innovative Intersection Projects in Ohio (25 minutes) Two projects - a diverging diamond interchange along I-270 in Columbus completed in 2013, and a proposed Superstreet intersection along US 35 in Beavercreek currently in design - will be used to illustrate how innovative intersections improve safety and mobility, and highlight design and operational details that make these intersections work for trucks and freight haulers in Ohio.
