MSE Gets “Lift” From Columbus McKinnon<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_12_16.html#>
Materials science deals with some of the smallest substances on earth, items that are frequently not even one billionth of a meter in size. Oddly, studying materials at such a tiny scale can require some massive equipment—which presents the issue of moving it around the lab space. Thankfully for UT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Columbus McKinnon Corporation has provided generous assistance.

UT Hosted Industrial Advisory Board in Conjunction with Ma2JIC<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_12_16.html#>
About one year ago, UT became the newest site of the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC). Ma2JIC is a NSF funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), established six years ago with Colorado School of Mines, Lehigh University, Ohio State University (OSU), and the University of Wisconsin as the original sites. In early August 2016, UT hosted the semi-annual Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), bringing over 100 participants from industry, national laboratories, and academia to Knoxville.

UT Research Reveals Certain Pollutants Worse Than Thought<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_12_16.html#>
Nitrous oxide pollution typically conjures up images of acid rain or a smokestack belching out industrial byproduct. While that might be the poster child for such pollution, the reality is that manufacturing sources produce only about ten percent of the nitrogen-based pollution. The real culprit is something much more down to earth—literally. Agricultural sources contribute the vast majority of this type of pollution through their use of nitrates, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Dr. Joshua Fu along with graduate student Jian Sun and research assistant professor Dr. Kan Huang, all of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
