Position Summary: |
Coordinates activities at Newman Library’s Circulation/Reserve Unit during assigned hours to ensure that library patrons receive prompt & courteous service; make decisions following circulation and reserve policies and procedures; retrieves books from return bins; searches for library materials. Performs database functions on item screens and patron accounts in an integrated library system to include: processing claimed returned materials, processing overdue items and current hold lists, processing Book Runner requests. Works with security guards as they monitor the library during late shift operating hours; looking for safety violations and maintenance issues reporting problems to the appropriate areas. Contribute to and assist with the development of the Libraries’ Learning Environments Program. This position is considered necessary to the safety and vital operations of University libraries and is identified as emergency personnel. Emergency personnel are required to report to work during periods of authorized closings, which may include weekends, holidays and during inclement weather. |

Required Qualifications: |
-Experience working in a public service capacity (in a highly public visible environment) -Experience in Windows-based and MAC OS computer environment and data entry. -Experience in interpreting and explaining policies and procedures to customers -Experience dealing effectively in situations where assistance from VT Police may be required -Experience in a work setting to prioritize and organize work tasks, with attention to detail. -Experience working without supervision and independently make decisions during shifts -Ability to walk and monitor a multi-story library facility to secure, or access doors and offices. -Ability to independently, frequently and safely move and handle books weighing 2 to 8 pounds and to perform frequent manual circulation of these materials. -Strong communication skills |

Preferred Qualifications: |
-Experience working with integrated library system. -Knowledge of research library environment. -Experience dealing effectively in situations where assistance from emergency responders helpful |

Work Schedule: (32-35 hours per week) These positions have a set work schedule and these hours are not flexible and include working during school breaks and summer. First position: Sunday-Thursday from 12:00 midnight to 7:00am; Second position: Sunday – Thursday from 11:00pm top 6:00am (these hours may vary due to breaks and holidays for both positions) These positions are considered necessary to the safety and vital operations of University libraries and is identified as emergency personnel. Emergency personnel are required to report to work during periods of authorized closings, which may include weekends, holidays and during inclement weather. |
