UT, TVA Business Experiment Still Going Strong After Fifty Years<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_15_16.html#>
Indigenous is a term usually associated with people, not business. However, an idea brought about by the Tennessee Valley Authority and UT’s Department of Industrial Engineering more than fifty years ago continues to challenge that notion. Dunlap Industries, named for the county seat of its Sequatchie County headquarters, grew from the concept of indigenous businesses developed by the TVA and UT.

Dr. Dave Clarke, director of the Center for Transportation Research (CTR), was interviewed by the website wallethub.com<https://wallethub.com/> about the best and worst cities to drive in. He was part of a panel of experts that weighed in, and offered possible solutions, on issues of cost, safety, and environmental impact concerns for the auto industry.

CTR Researchers Published in Special Issue of Journal<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_15_16.html#>
A special "rail safety" issue of the Journal of Transportation Safety & Security is now out, featuring the work of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty and researchers. Drs. Asad Khattak and Steve Richards and alumni Jun Liu and Bryan Bartnik are authors on one of the papers in the issue.

[Dodds]

Dodds serves on Chinese Advisory Council<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_15_16.html#>
Dr. H. Lee Dodds, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering, recently returned from Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in Harbin, China, where he serves on the International Advisory Council for HEU’s College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST). The purpose of the International Advisory Council is to provide advice and recommendations to CNST on their education and research programs. The council meets annually and consists of nuclear experts in education and research from several different countries including England, Finland, Switzerland, Japan, China, and the United States. Dodds is in the second year of a five-year appointment on the council.

Dr. David Greene, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, visited the International Institute for Carbon Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER), headquartered at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. He was a member of an international panel of experts assisting the World Premier International Research Center Initiative of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He presented a technical review of the center's activities. Its research is concerned with developing the technologies necessary to enable a carbon neutral society. Technologies related to the use of hydrogen as a primary energy carrier in addition to electricity are a primary focus of the center's research activities.

Felix Wu, supervisory program manager, Vehicle Technologies Office, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, US Department of Energy, will speak on "The Challenges and Opportunities in Lightweight Materials and Propulsion Materials for Vehicle Applications" at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, in Room 414 of Ferris Hall.

WiSTAR3 Presents Topics for Women in STEM<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_15_16.html#>
Women often need to take maternity leave, sick leave, or may have to care for a sick relative. Women in STEM Advancing Research, Readiness, and Retention (WiSTAR3) will have a panel discussion regarding experiences and advice about the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) 4:00-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in Room 53B of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building. The panel will include Dr. Judy Day, Dr. Tessa Burch-Smith, Dr. Christine Nattrass, and Dr. Stephanie TerMaath. Following a brief introduction from the panelists, small groups will continued discussion. This event is part of the monthly series of workshops and discussions hosted by the CFW-STEM<http://cfwstem.weebly.com/> WiSTAR3program.

MS Technology will co-sponsor an Engineering Career Fair from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, at the DoubleTree Hilton, 215 S. Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge. Heavy hor d'oeuvres will be provided. The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program<http://multicultural.utk.edu/services/tutoring/> provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program<http://multicultural.utk.edu/services/book-loan/> allows students to borrow up to two textbooks free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu<http://multicultural.utk.edu/>.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.
