Even so, the strain on US/Cuba relations for the past few decades has stuck around as a reminder of those darker times. Now, thanks to a thawing diplomatic climate, those students got the chance to experience Cuba—its people, its places, and its culture—in a way that would have been but a dream to their parents or grandparents. Students will visit the Yucatan Peninsula and work alongside Mayan villagers on an orphanage project. The group will also visit the world-famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum, plus the Government Palace and Museum of Anthropology. Read more<http://www.engr.utk.edu/global/upcoming_trips.html> Faculty & Staff News [Ed Burdette] Retiring Burdette Looks Back on His Fifty-Plus Years at UT<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_29_16.html#> Germany and Austria were still occupied by Allied forces, Hawaii and Alaska weren’t yet states, and chimpanzees—let alone humans—had not gotten anywhere near space exploration. That was the situation around the world when Edwin “Ed” Burdette came to UT as an undergraduate in the mid-1950s. Aside from a brief period spent earning his doctorate at the University of Illinois and one and a half years working in Memphis, he’s been at UT’s civil engineering department ever since, having seen a number of changes in his given area of expertise as well as the university and the world around him. Alkabaa, a PhD candidate in industrial and systems engineering (ISE), and Dr. Alberto Garcia, ISE professor, has been selected in the 2016 ISERC<http://www.iienet2.org/annual2/> as a best track paper in engineering management. Titled "A Mahalanobis Distance Based Project Selection and Multi-Choice Classification Methodology," the paper placed second and earned a cash award. Featured Student: Mark Terrones II [Mark Terrones II]Mark Terrones II, a mechanical engineering major, spent his summer in his fourth rotational assignment as a production engineering co-op at DENSO Manufacturing in Maryville, Tennessee. His duties included implementing new assembly lines and manufacturing processes, as well as continuously improving existing processes to advance production efficiency while decreasing defect possibilities. As an engineer, Terrones found the work very challenging. He also felt that it was gratifying to wprk each day to solve new problems that directly affect production workers on the assembly floor. "DENSO is a great company with dedicated employees that have assisted me from day one in growing as a professional, an engineer, and as an individual," said Terrones. "I am grateful for the opportunity with Denso and the Engineering Professional Practice Office."
