Keppens, current head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, brings a knowledge of advanced materials—substances with properties that go beyond the norm in one or more aspects, such as electronically or chemically—that will allow her to transition to the new role without a learning curve. [Betty Bright] Bright Retires From UTSI<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_01_16.html#> Betty Bright, an administrative support assistant in the Academic & Research Administrative Support (ARAS) Department, retired June 30 after thirty-seven years with the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI). At a recent retirement party held for Bright, Dr. James Simonton, interim UTSI executive director, highlighted her accomplishments and presented her with a gift from the faculty, staff, and students. Bright plans to spend more time visiting her friends and family far and near and work on outside interests. Six students took advantage of the recently opened travel possibility to experience the country's culture and participate in an engineering project. Read more<http://www.engr.utk.edu/global/upcoming_trips.html> [Rupy Sawhney] Engineering Camp Welcomes Record Number of International Students<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_07_01_16.html#> The International Lean Summer Program has grown steadily since it began in 2011 as a way to bring international students to Knoxville and showcase some of the industrial engineering programs UT could offer. Having seen its enrollment grow tenfold from that first class of twenty-six students, the program is now so successful that the Institute of International Education asked that it be expanded from one month to two. One sign of that effort’s incredible success returned to campus this week as the Adventures in STEM camp welcomed middle school girls from around East Tennessee for a hands-on look at the opportunities that await them in those fields. The retreat gave attendees an opportunity to find out what resources were readily available for them at UTSI, Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Tennessee Technological University (TTU), and the Hands on Science Center (HOSC). Weisenberg was selected for the award based on the peer review of her technical paper, "Optimization of Ventricular Catheter Design Using High-Performance Computing." King worked as a civil engineering inspector in the construction field of Eastern Federal Lands. She spent most of her time working on the missing link of the Foothills Parkway in Townsend, Tennessee. She also did inspections of ongoing construction projects to ensure that the as-built matched the drawings from the design division and kept and inspector’s daily report that detailed each day’s events, the materials and equipment used, and the number of employees working. Outside of the field work, she maintained a concrete placement log with information regarding slump, air content, and temperature. King learned many new technical skills such as reading plans, concrete testing, native plant revegetation, and general construction site activities. The most valuable benefit she took away from this experience was a new knowledge of how diverse civil engineering is and how much of every aspect is represented in one single project.
