Salaried; Full Time

Primary Function

Reports to the Library Director aReports to the Library Director and assists in the management, supervision, and administration of the library to provide maximum services to library patrons in accordance with library policies.


Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills

  *   Completion of a Masters in Library Science degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (preferred)
  *   A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of standard library principles and practices including freedom of speech, copyright, collection development, deselecting, and, patron and staff confidentiality
  *   A minimum of five years of hands-on public library experience (preferred) which included: working at the circulation desk; providing both online and print reference services; planning and conducting library programs and events; marketing of library materials and activities; working with integrated library systems; cataloging using MARC and RDA records, Dewey, Sears, and authority control; using OCLC for interlibrary loan transactions
  *   Library supervisory and managerial experience
  *   Involvement in professional organizations, workshops, and continuing education activities
  *   A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of employee rights, state and federal wage and hour laws and regulations, health insurance options, and retirement programs
  *   Ability to interact positively with patrons, Board members, staff, volunteers, and external agencies such as vendors and community organizations.





Specific Duties


  *   Assists the Director in the administration of the library including services, collection development, and personnel
  *   Acts as the Director in the Director's absence, following established policies and procedures
  *   Serves as the assistant to the Library Treasurer Agent

  *   Assists in planning, implementation, and evaluation of long- and short-term goals and objectives
  *   Manages integrated library system functions
  *   Coordinates adult programming
  *   Supervises and works with Library's E-rate coordinator
  *   Supervises and evaluates staff as directed
  *   Plans, recommends, and implements staff development and training activities
  *   Administers and coordinates staff health insurance and benefits
  *   Attends Library Board meetings and prepares meeting minutes
  *   Maintains procedures and Board-approved policy documents
  *   Supervises buildings and grounds operations (including recommendations for repairs and improvements) and personnel; works with the Director on construction projects

Physical Requirements

The Assistant Director must be able to:  communicate with patrons and staff; respond to visual prompts on the computer terminal; climb stairs; shelve and retrieve library materials and supplies from tops/bottoms of shelves; and, lift a minimum of 25 pounds.

 The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

The employee must perform highly complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge and must be able to concentrate on detail with moderate interruption.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear.  The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and to reach with hands and arms.  Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various types of office equipment.  The employee is routinely required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
