Bringing Books to Life! (BBTL) is an award-winning literacy initiative created by the Nashville Public Library in collaboration with various agencies and institutions to serve the families and children of Nashville. The program was expanded to include adult literacy in summer 2013. This program, sponsored by the Nashville Public Library Foundation, seeks to support family and adult literacy, high school equivalency, and English as a Second Language direct service providers in innovative and creative ways to make the greatest gains for Nashville’s adult learning community. Adult Literacy Program Specialist:  This is a part-time, 20-hour per week, privately-funded position for a candidate who possesses experience working with adult learners and adult literacy service providers. Reporting to the Adult Literacy Coordinator, the Adult Literacy Program Specialist will assist with and/or conduct workshops for adult literacy providers and learners, assist with outcome-based evaluation, refer the public to the appropriate resources, and participate in other program activities as needed. Candidate will be expected to travel throughout Davidson County. Evening and some weekend work required. This position offers a flexible work schedule. Wage is $14.30 per hour.

Specific duties include:

• Planning and delivering digital skills workshops throughout the community
• Maintaining and updating the adult literacy mobile computer lab
• Planning and logistics for professional development opportunities for adult educators
• Conducting workshops and trainings for adult literacy providers and learners
• Maintaining electronic/online message board and invites to adult literacy events
• Assisting program staff with adult literacy events
• Preparing materials for workshops and presentations (including printing labels, preparing mailings, making copies)
• Maintaining an inventory of supplies for workshops and presentations
• Assisting in identifying potential partnering agencies within Davidson County
• Fostering existing partnerships with agencies within Davidson County
• Using Microsoft Excel to analyze and report data
• Assisting with department programming as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or related field
• Excellent written and oral communication abilities
• Experience working with adult learners (High School equivalency, Adult Basic Ed, ESL, computer instruction)
• Experience conducting workshops and training sessions
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Fluency in a second language (Spanish or Arabic preferred)
• Excellent organizational skills
• Knowledge of current literacy research and best practices in adult literacy
• Understanding of and enthusiasm for library services and mission
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff and staff from local agencies and institutions working with adult learners
• Flexible, collaborative, and innovative; ability to work independently AND as part of a team
• Experience with computer programming or graphic design

THE POSITION:

This is a Civil Service position located at Nashville Public Library. Position performs supervisory and administrative duties.  When located in Branch Services the position oversees the daily operations of a large 20-25,000 sq. ft. library branch and may oversee multiple community library branches.  When located at the Main Library oversees the daily operations of a system-wide function in a major area of the division. This posting will fill a current vacancy in Branch Services and future vacancies.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Supervises direct report employees at a large area branch or division and the supervisors at the selected community branch libraries or divisions.
• Schedules work hours to ensure that all public areas are covered.
• Evaluates employees, counsels with and disciplines employees as needed, and approves leave requests.
• Performs difficult or complex professional work in his/her area.
• Develops and maintains library materials collections.
• Assesses staffing and physical resource needs of their area.
• Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget.
• Provides Reference and Reader’s Advisory service to the public.
• Receives and resolves complaints from the public.
• Performs administrative duties, writes reports and performs statistical analyses.
• Plans programs and activities.
• Attends meetings as required.
• Promotes programs and services for the library in the community.
• Keeps abreast of new trends in Library and Information Science.
• Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science with a Library concentration from an accredited college or university and 5 years of professional library experience, including 3 years of supervisory experience. The Library Science program must also be accredited by the American Library Association or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
