Position Summary:

Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks creative and enthusiastic applicants for the position of Instructional Design Librarian. The Libraries aspire to prepare students to work, live, and thrive within a global context, and to partner with faculty incorporating a wide array of literacies, fluencies, competencies, and pedagogies into their teaching practices. Working widely across the library system and the University, this position presents a unique opportunity to be deeply engaged across the teaching and learning enterprise and to contribute to the ongoing development of a new online learning platform while also helping to shape the mission and vision of the online learning program as it is still developing.

 

Reporting to the Associate Director for Learning Services, the Instructional Design Librarian will serve as a member of the Learning Services unit and will work closely with other online learning specialists in the unit to continue in the development of a vision for the online learning program and collaborate with others to operationalize that vision. In addition, this position will be responsible for contributing to and leading strategic efforts for creating impactful, meaningful, and inclusive learning opportunities in support of the Libraries’ undergraduate education program.

Required Qualifications:

 

- Master’s degree in library and information science or equivalent

- Broad knowledge and understanding of online and face to face library instruction and principles relating to information literacy and other emerging literacies

- Demonstrated experience with instructional design principles, learning theories and best practices for their use in library and higher education settings

- Experience or coursework in designing online modules or other digital learning objects

- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience in building cross-functional partnerships with many different units and demonstrated collaboration skills

- Ability to work as part of a team in order to accomplish departmental and institutional goals in a fast-paced, energetic environment

- Evidence of successful project management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience or coursework in assessment of student learning outcomes and program assessment

- Experience teaching online courses

- Experience designing module-based learning solutions

- Experience with the Canvas Learning Management System or another equivalent learning management system

- Experience with Adobe Creative suite, Camtasia and other software for creating library tutorials and interactive modules

- Knowledge of ADA compliance for online and blended learning environments

- Experience with Springshare (LibGuides, LibAnswers, etc)
