Topic: Oversize and Overweight Freight Shipments

Date/Time: June 29, 2016 1:00 – 2:30 ET (please note that the seminar is being held on the 5th Wednesday this month)

Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description: Within the trucking industry, the percentage of oversize/overweight cargo shipments has grown significantly in recent years, with some states having experienced 50% growth in those truck movements over the last 10 to 15 years.  Moving oversize/overweight freight presents a number of challenges, including infrastructure constraints, regulatory restrictions, and complex permitting processes. This patchwork of regulations, permitting processes, and other physical and information limitations can result in inefficiencies for multi-state oversize/overweight truck movements, which can lead to increased financial costs for carriers and shippers and negative societal impacts for affected communities.

This webinar will discuss the research conducted as part of NCHRP 08‐97, Finding and Using Data to Identify and Evaluate Corridors for Transporting Multi-state, Multimodal Oversize/Overweight Freight, which will be formally released in the near future.  The intent of this research project was to create a guidebook that describes the current oversize/overweight regulatory and permitting landscape in the U.S., identify and define the challenges associated with multi-state oversize or overweight freight shipments, and pinpoint options to address these challenges.  The following learning objectives have been identified for the webinar:

·         What challenges do state Departments of Transportation encounter when permitting oversize/overweight freight?

·         What is the oversize/overweight truck regulation and permitting landscape in the U.S., what are some of the key differences across jurisdictions and how do these differences affect oversize/overweight shippers and carriers?

·         What opportunities exist to improve multimodal and multi‐state oversize/overweight cargo routing decisions, and to streamline route planning and permitting processes?
