The team developed FastCast, a pressure-induced medical cast that overcomes problems typically associated with regular plaster casts. They were awarded a $10,000 first-place prize, plus the Treat Prize of $1,000. With the Volkswagen-sponsored Engineering VOLunteers for Tenth Graders, or eVOL10, now under way at UT’s College of Engineering, students in high school and middle school are getting a chance to take a deeper look into future possibilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM. He will begin on July 18. Whorton currently is the chief technologist of Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, Alabama, and president of Teledyne Optech Inc. in Kiln, Mississippi. His expertise is in modeling, designing, and analyzing control systems for aerospace vehicles. McConnell Professor and associate head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, presented a keynote invited lecture at 2016 IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications in Benevento, Italy on May 17. Read more<http://memea2016.ieee-ims.org/invited-lectures> [Stephen Paddison] Paddison Appointed RSC Fellow<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Dr. Stephen J. Paddison, the Gibson Endowed Chair in Engineering, has recently been appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry, founded in 1841, is the United Kingdom’s professional body for chemical scientists and the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. The honor is given to researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of chemical science. Paddison's research focuses on elucidating structure-property relationships in materials commonly employed as the electrolyte in energy conversion and storage devices through simulations. Recent funding from the NSF has allowed his group to expand efforts into anion exchange membranes and polymerized ionic liquids. He currently serves as associate editor of the Royal Society's journal, RSCAdvances. [Brian Wirth] NE Professors Earn National Awards<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Dr. Brian Wirth, Governor's Chair Professor for Computational Nuclear Engineering received the Mishima Award at the American Nuclear Society (ANS) meeting in New Orleans this week. Dr. Kurt Terrani, an adjunct assistant professor in nuclear engineering, received the Landis Young Member Engineering Achievement Award. Wirth also presented a plenary lecture entitled "Recent Advances in Modeling Nuclear Fuel Performance" at the opening plenary session of the embedded topical meeting, "Nuclear Fuels and Structural Materials." Read more<http://ansannual.org/> [John Simpson] Simpson Speaks on Superhydrophobic Tech<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Dr. John Simpson, research professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science, gave a talk on superhydrophobic technology at Idaho National Lab's CAES center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on Monday, June 13. He is scheduled to give another talk on July 6 at the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)in Golden Colorado. Speakers & Events [Orange Cones] Estabrook Road to Close for Summer<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Most of Estabrook Road will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting Monday, June 20, and will reopen before the beginning of fall 2016 semester. Estabrook Road will close from the intersection at Lower Drive to the intersection at Cumberland Avenue. As part of the detour around the project, Tee Martin Drive and the near-stadium portion of Estabrook will remain open to Lower Drive. The traffic direction on Lower Drive will be reversed to enable motorists to turn right onto Middle Drive. Read more<http://tntoday.utk.edu/2016/06/15/estabrook-road-close-summer/> Student News and Opportunity [Nuclear engineering students in Prague] Nuclear Engineering Students Train in Czech Republic<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Twelve undergraduate students of from the Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE) participated in a study-abroad Experimental Reactor Physics Laboratory class (NE427) during the summer mini-term. Dr. Ondøej Chvála, a research assistant professor in NE, led the class. Students spent the first week visiting several sites in the Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria. During the second week, students worked with a nuclear reactor VR-1 at the Czech Technical University in Prague, performing reactor physics related measurements and working out lab reports. The class is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in nuclear reactor dynamics and hands on experimental work. Held this year for the fourth time, this class has led to mutual student exchanges and research collaborations between UT and the Czech Technical University. [Can Huang] Engineering Student Receives Chinese Government Award<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> Can Huang, an electrical engineering doctoral candidate who works with CURENT<http://curent.utk.edu/>, was recently honored with the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. His research focuses on the advanced control, communication, and computing methods for power systems and power electronics. This year's conference was entitled "Rooftop to Rivers: Integrating Built and Natural Ecosystems." Students from all over the country gathered—along with UT students from the departments of civil and environmental engineering and biosystems engineering—to learn about topics relating to watershed planning, stream restoration, sustainable food systems, and more. The paper highlighted areas of improvement in hospital discharge process. The award was presented at the May 2016 IISE Honors & Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California. Upreti is working towards PhD degree under supervision of Dr Rupy Sawhney. [Dominican Republic] Deadline Extended for Dominican Republic Alternative Break Trip<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_06_17_16.html#> The College of Engineering office of Global Initiatives offers two upcoming opportunities for international travel and experience. An Alternative Fall Break trip to the Dominican Republic will include a construction service project in the town of La Piedra. Sign-up deadline is June 20, with a $100 discount for the first seven enrollees. An Alternative Winter Break trip to Mexico will center on an orphanage project in the Yucatan Peninsula.
