Position Summary:

Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks creative and enthusiastic applicants for the position of Learning Services Librarian. The Libraries aspire to prepare students to work, live, and thrive within a global context, and to partner with faculty incorporating a wide array of literacies, fluencies, competencies, and pedagogies into their teaching practices. Working widely across the library system and the University, this position presents an opportunity to be deeply engaged across the teaching and learning enterprise.

 

Reports to the Associate Director, Learning Services:

While the core duties of this position will revolve around designing and implementing various types of library instruction, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape parts of this position based on his or her interests and skills. In particular, the successful candidate will work with Learning Services leadership to identify and build partnerships with liaison departments that would be an appropriate match for the successful candidate’s background and interests.

 

The Learning Services Librarian would be responsible for:

- Designing and developing instruction (face-to-face, blended and online) for foundational and first year experience courses

- Collaborating with faculty to identify high impact areas within the curriculum to pilot innovative pedagogies

- Serving as a liaison to an academic department in a humanities or social sciences discipline to include participating in the appropriate liaison working group, providing reference consultations to assigned department(s), teaching upper-level instruction in the discipline(s) and purchasing collections materials that support research and teaching needs

- Attending meetings and events for liaison departments, communicating items of news and interest from and back to the Libraries, and finding referrals to other service areas in the Libraries

- Working with the online learning team to identify areas within the curriculum for online content development

- Working with the online team to develop and assess library instructional materials including digital content such as tutorials and online modules

- Keeping abreast of new developments in the areas of instructional technology and individual instruction skills through continuous professional development

- Collaborating and providing leadership on learning related activities within the Unit, Division, Libraries, and University-wide to include serving on appropriate professional committees

- Providing quality services in a professional manner with a demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence, and diversity and inclusion

- Performing other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

 

- MLS from an ALA-accredited graduate program or equivalent

- Broad knowledge and understanding of library instruction and principles relating to information literacy and other 21st century literacies

- Understanding of current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in library instruction and higher education

- Strong interpersonal skills in outreach, relationship building, and collaboration

- Ability to work as part of a team in order to accomplish departmental and institutional goals in a fast-paced, energetic environment

- Demonstrated learner-oriented approach to instruction and other library services

- Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with Adobe Creative suite, Camtasia and other software for creating library tutorials and interactive modules

- Experience with the Canvas Learning Management System

- Experience with Springshare (LibGuides, LibAnswers, etc)

- Experience or academic coursework related to instructional design, educational technologies, or the equivalent

- Experience or academic coursework related to assessment of instructional initiatives

- Evidence of successful project management skills
