Position: 30430 Archivist – Collections Archivist

Annual Salary Range:  $30,724.80 - $48,924.00

Currently, the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) seeks a highly motivated Archivist to manage books, newspapers, and photograph collections. Reporting to the head of the Collections Section, the archivist will be responsible for describing, preserving, and providing access to the ADAH’s printed materials and photograph collections.

Duties:

• Arrange, describe, and catalog books, newspapers, and photograph collections acquired by the ADAH.

• Preserve books, newspapers, and photograph collections and monitor the environment to ensure long-term maintenance of the materials.

• Work closely with other staff members in developing exhibits and other public programs at the department.

• Work with the department’s registrar and prospective donors to ensure donations fit the parameters of the ADAH collections policy.

• Provide reference assistance to researchers about printed materials and photograph collections.

• Arrange and describe manuscripts and government records collections as needed or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of and/or experience with collections management and archival core competencies.

• Knowledge of the principles and practices involved with the arrangement and description and collections management of permanently valuable records.

• Knowledge of and/or experience with descriptive standards and tools such as Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC 21 Formats for Bibliographic Data, Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF), Cataloger’s Desktop, and Classification Web.

• Knowledge of electronic records and reformatting best practices.

• Knowledge of current issues and trends in archival practices and descriptive standards, and ability to keep up-to-date with new practices and techniques.

• Evidence of commitment to the archival profession by memberships and participation in professional associations.

• Record of ongoing professional development and contribution.

• Ability to work well with a diverse population.

• Ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing.

• Ability to work independently, and perform effectively in a collaborative environment.

• Ability to lift and carry heavy boxes weighing on average 40 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in history, political science, government or a related field plus – two graduate level courses in archival administration or one year’s professional experience in archival or records management work.

• A valid driver’s license

Now in its second century of service, the Alabama Department of Archives and History is mindful of its obligation to preserve the records of its past and to serve the information needs of future generations of researchers. • assistance to state agencies and local governments in the preservation of their records of historical value

• work to preserve modern records in fragile formats, such as computer records, photographs, and video tapes

• educational programs and tours to school children, tourists, and interested citizens

• reference service

• maintenance of the security of collections held by the Archives

• use of new information technology to extend the department's services
