THE POSITION:

This is a Civil Service position located at Nashville Public Library. Position performs supervisory and administrative duties.  When located in Branch Services the position oversees the daily operations of a large 20-25,000 sq. ft. library branch and may oversee multiple community library branches.  When located at the Main Library oversees the daily operations of a system-wide function in a major area of the division. This posting will fill a current vacancy in Branch Services and future vacancies.   

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science with a Library concentration from an accredited college or university and 5 years of professional library experience, including 3 years of supervisory experience. The Library Science program must also be accredited by the American Library Association or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Providence College, a member of the HELIN Consortium, seeks an energetic, flexible & innovative leader to collaborate in the College’s teaching, learning & research

enterprise by guiding its research & research education (R&E) initiatives.  The librarian reports to the Library Director & is a tenure-track member of the ordinary faculty.  As a tenure-track faculty, the R&E Librarian must demonstrate a successful scholarly research agenda, which would meet tenure requirements within 5 years.

The  Research & Education unit involves all professional library staff, as well as numerous Library Commons & Student Commons Assistants.  This position has primary responsibility for R&E services & resources: 1) leadership in the library’s R&E initiatives in the library & on the Web, 2) leadership in PC’s development of R&E research materials & research

education curricula of all types & in all formats.  The R&E area also collaborates closely with teaching & research faculty & with other areas of the Library Commons: Technology & Access, Digital Publishing Services, Special Collections & Collections Services.

Located in Rhode Island’s capital city, one hour from Boston & three hours from New York City, the College has consistently been ranked among the top regional institutions in the Northeast. The College places a strong emphasis on its teaching & student research mission.  Its library is an advanced Commons with balanced emphases on tradition / high-touch & emerging technologies / high-tech.  The Library+Commons provides resources, services & spaces as an interactive teaching, learning & research library.  It has renovated most patron spaces & has implemented the full range of patron-focused tools, services & resources, including digital repositories.  The Head of R&E will serve as a key leader in the evolving Library+Commons.

ResponsibilitiesMust demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement & service for tenure & promotion providing intellectual vision, expertise & effective leadership to the College & the library in:

1) collaborating with the Director, Library & College staff & faculty to plan, implement &

manage the library’s R&E assets & projects as a model library of the future;

2) successfully pursuing a scholarly research and publishing program for tenure & promotion;

3) managing the library’s staff & programs in support of teaching, learning & research;

4) leading development of the library as an interactive teaching, learning & research laboratory

for external & internal patrons, emphasizing service desks & Web-based services, just-in-time tutorials & intuitive, patron-focused approaches;

5) leading high-technology research & development regarding tools & resources for articulated

research & research education, including ongoing training & education of staff across the library;

6) leading implementation of current and emerging technology tools (e.g., research guides, assessment tools, citation management tools) in research & research education initiatives at PC & beyond;

7) ensuring appropriate Web presence for R&E as an integral part of the library’s Web presence;

8) anticipating future trends in an evolving R&E environment, maintaining current awareness of

national & international developments affecting research, research education, knowledge management, metadata, & information retrieval, & participating actively in  professional networks & conferences to monitor & participate in shaping changes in higher-education research and research education standards & practices;

9) contributing to the library’s quantitative & qualitative assessment of services through data-

gathering, –analysis & -visualization (e.g., Tableau, Excel, Access);

10) leading the library’s outreach program, including research-desk & research education activities & collection development;

11) serving on professional committees as appropriate within the College & in the broader professional community;

12) participating in problem-solving & policy-making activities; &

13) performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required-

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent graduate degree/s and experience; additional graduate degree/s in content area/s strongly preferred;
  • demonstrated professional research & research education expertise & experience, including working knowledge of the range of R&E models, emerging trends,  technologies, best-practices & changing roles;
  • demonstrated scholarly & research interests and productivity sufficient to meet tenure-track requirements;
  • demonstrated high technology savvy & expertise in appropriate technologies, preferably Windows, Macintosh & other operating systems;
  • demonstrated ability & experience in theory & practice of teaching & learning & pedagogy, especially as related to research education;
  • ability & willingness to write proposals & (grant, project, etc.);
  • project design & management experience;
  • ability to work independently & successfully in a collegial & dynamic environment,  learn & teach new technologies quickly, think on ones feet with energy & flexibility;
  • ability to develop strategies for integrating new technologies & services into the existing framework
  • knowledge of the issues & trends in librarianship, including digital resource & copyright compliance issues;

Digital Projects Librarian (2 positions; 2-year term)

Ohio University Libraries seeks two teamwork-oriented individuals to advance the Ohio University Libraries’ expanding digital presence and digital curation program.  The Digital Projects Librarian (Digital Initiatives) will report to the Digital Initiatives Coordinator, and focus on the technical aspects of digital project production such as managing imaging, metadata creation, and ingest.  The Digital Projects Librarian (Arts & Archives) will report to the Head of Arts and Archives and focus on collections research and description. 

 

The successful candidates will work together to advance the Ohio University Libraries’ expanding digital presence and digital curation program.  We seek candidates that are committed to working effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds; willing to learn and develop professionally; and energized by an exciting future.

 

Responsibilities

The Digital Projects Librarians will support the Ohio University Libraries’ efforts to advance its digital presence in the execution of digital projects and the laying of a foundation for a robust digital curation program.  These duties include but are not limited to:

·         Collaborate with Libraries staff to select, research, and describe collections

·         Engage in enhanced processing and description of collections, such as the creation or enhancement of finding aids

·         Create, review, and enhance metadata according to recognized standards

·         Engages in research on and about collections

·         Support successful project management through all stages of the digitization chain

·         Engage in documentation and analysis of workflows in order to develop and document procedures

·         Contribute to development of digital preservation policies

·         Create written content about Libraries’ collections for electronic publications and platforms

Qualifications

 

Required:

·         A master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution; or a master’s in archival science or public history

·         Knowledge of standards and best practices for archival description, metadata, digitization, and handling and preserving special collections materials

·         Demonstrated ability to manage projects, including the ability to structure and plan work effectively to meet established deadlines

·         Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills

·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively both collaboratively and independently

 

Preferred

·         Experience in digitization production environment

·         Experience working in an academic library setting

·         Supervisor experience

·         Understanding of intellectual property, privacy, and other rights issues

·         Familiarity with digital curation standards and best practices
