THE POSITION:

These non-Civil service positions are part-time 19.5 hours per week.  Positions are located system-wide.  This position performs clerical and physical duties involved in day-to-day operations of a public branch or division.  Health insurance benefits are not available. Successful candidates must pass an alphabetizing/sorting skills test. This is a continuous posting. There is not a need to reapply if you applied for this position within the past twelve (12) months. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Sorts and shelves library materials in the correct order.
  • Empties book depositories and helps prepare materials for re-shelving.
  • Maintains correct arrangement of materials by checking for proper sequence.
  • Answers directional questions from the public.
  • Clears tables of materials, straightens furniture, and replenishes supplies.
  • May perform other housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • May assist with library programs and computer services as requested.
  • May assist with opening and closing activities at a branch or department.
  • Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.
  • Requires walking, standing, reaching, bending, lifting book bins that can weigh up to 30 pounds and pushing carts of books that can weigh up to 100 pounds.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Eighth Grade Education

 

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.                               

 

Preferred Knowledge/Abilities/Experience:

  • Skill in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to alphabetize and sort library materials by the Dewey decimal classification system.
  • Ability to perform various clerical functions.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

THE POSITION:

This is a Nashville Public Library Civil Service position located at the Main Library.  We are seeking a dynamic, energetic and uniquely talented individual to provide system-wide leadership for Teen Services.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for engaging teens in library services through inventive and effective strategies.  This position also oversees and supervises daily operations of the Main Library Teen Services area.  Performs related duties as required.

 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Supervises employees working in his/her assigned area.
  • Schedules work hours to ensure that all public areas are covered.
  • Creates an inviting and welcoming space for a diverse teen population.
  • Performs outreach to develop partnerships and collaborations with community organizations.
  • Assists the public with the use of library materials and equipment.
  • Receives and attempts to resolve complaints from the public.
  • Plans, organizes and directs programming and activities for teens to include Teen Summer Learning Program, Teen Read Week and other system-wide programs.
  • Evaluates employees and approves leave requests.
  • Conducts group in-service and individual training as needed.
  • Develops and maintains library materials collections.
  • Provides Reference and Reader's Advisory service to the public.
  • Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget.
  • Works with administrative staff on formulation of library policies.
  • May write or assist in writing grant proposals.
  • May oversee or coordinate implementation of grant funded programs.
  • Adheres to library Customer Service Guidelines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional library experience with emphasis in teen services and including two (2) years acting in a lead or supervisory capacity. The Library Science program must be accredited by the American Library Association or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

 

Valid "Class D" Driver's License.

  • Fluent bilingual language skills.
  • Knowledge of Civil Service and departmental rules, polices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library service.
  • Ability to determine the needs of the public being served.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
