Position Summary:

The Assistant Director for Strategic Research and Analysis provides support for strategic intra- and inter-university initiatives in key areas to aid library administrators in better decision-making. In collaboration with the Dean, appropriate department directors, and associate/assistant deans, the incumbent researches libraries and universities and their initiatives, as well as their economic, socio-technical, and cultural environments, including emerging trends, and service experiences. Specifically, the incumbent will seek and analyze new, innovative ways of providing information / data / content services and operating new technology and human resource infrastructures. Research activities also focus internally on Virginia Tech’s academic, administrative, technology, and outreach programs to enhance the Libraries’ understanding of their operations. The work includes the production of new statistics and data that supports the position’s analyses and recommendations.

Key initiatives and projects will include working with the SHARE initiative, Educopia Institute programs, grant-funded projects, library development, the Dean’s Advisory Committee, University Library Committee, university commissions and committees, SCHEV and VIVA-related projects, and library outreach initiatives. The position also participates in analyzing existing library collections to determine their usefulness, retention parameters, and desired formats.

The assistant director reports to the Assistant Dean & Chief of Staff primarily, with a reporting relationship to the Director of Collections and Technical Services, and at times works directly with the Dean on strategic initiatives and research projects..

Required Qualifications:

 

- An ALA-accredited MLS and progressively responsible administrative experience in research university libraries.

- A subject-based master’s degree such as a MBA

- Experience in participating in university library strategic planning.

- Experience in conducting research, compiling data, performing analysis, and presenting findings.

- Collections analysis experience, including experience with library consortial arrangements for managing large research library collections of 2 million volumes and above; also includes experience with consortial digital libraries such as the HathiTrust and the Internet Archive.

- Experience with coordinating projects.

- A broad understanding of 21st century academic libraries and a willingness to learn and employ new approaches and technology to meet new demands.

- Willingness to travel within and outside Virginia to promote and represent the interests of Virginia Tech’s University Libraries and its initiatives.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

- Working knowledge of regional and national-level library initiatives such as SHARE, the Educopia Institute, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, the HathiTrust, and VIVA.

- Experience with managing quantitative data and familiarity with data management principles.

- Excellent oral and written interpersonal communication skills.

- Demonstrated ability to build productive working relationships, internally and externally, both in person and virtually.

- Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
