Caroline,

Since coming to UT five years ago, I have taken thousands of photos, labeled them and stored them on a shared drive in the college for our internal work.

When I worked for BellSouth for many years, we would have an annual stock photo shoot. All those in the company that needed the photos would submit a wish list of photos with the appropriate “props” and a description of each scenario. The organizer would then get employees to volunteer as “models” for the sessions and would be told what attire to wear or bring (lab coats, hard hats etc.)  The professional photographer would be there to take the photos and requester would be present to make sure the scene was technically accurate for their needs (especially making sure that proper safety equipment was used).

The system worked well because we had diversity representation, technical accuracy, signed releases, copyright ownership and great, high quality photos. It may be worth exploring a more systematic approach that could be replicated every year to keep the stock photos fresh. Nothing screams “out of touch” more than a photo with a student still using a two-year old phone, right? Something to ponder.

Subject: [CAMPCOMM] UT "Stock Images"

Hi all,

In the spirit of our meeting yesterday, I am using the listserv to poll the group on a specific question.  I was wondering if anyone has a good source of UT “stock photos,” specifically of students studying?

I understand that several departments have something they use internally, but is anyone willing to share?  Would a central repository be helpful?

Thanks,
