Description

The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (UL&LS) seeks a skilled, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Principal Cataloger to work in a team environment. This position reports to Director of Technical Services. This is a full-time, 12-month position with faculty rank and tenure status negotiable based on qualifications and experience. The desired start date is August 1, 2016. The annual salary is negotiable based on qualifications, with full benefits.
 
The Principal Cataloger will be responsible for providing management of the Cataloging section: supervising six catalogers; providing leadership, training, and support in the department’s participation in PCC/BIBCO/NACO cataloging; cataloging materials in English and foreign languages; cataloging rare book and archival materials for the Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections; and applying metadata for a wide range of formats, using current and emerging metadata schema, principles, and practices. With the Director of Technical Services, the Principal Cataloger will develop and maintain cataloging processes, procedures, and workflows.
 
Position Description 
 
Working in a team-oriented environment, the Principal Cataloger will:
 
 
Provide effective and efficient leadership to formulate, implement, and achieve Cataloging section goals and objectives in line with the larger Technical Services goals and the UL&LS’ strategic priorities.
 
Supervise cataloging staff and student employees.
 
Actively participate in the development, implementation and training of cataloging standards and practices for the section. 
 
Perform original and copy cataloging and classification in all formats using RDA, LC-PCC Policy Statements and Program for Cooperative Cataloging guidelines, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress subject headings and genre/form terms. 
 
Serve as UL&LS’ PCC/BIBCO representative and implement PCC/BIBCO standards at UNM. 
 
Contribute headings to the national authority file through NACO; contribute PCC records through BIBCO.
 
Catalog materials in foreign languages, primarily Spanish and Portuguese.
 
Oversee cataloging materials in all formats including print, digital, manuscripts, rare books, AV, archival and pictorial materials.
 
Manage controlled subject vocabularies and apply metadata schema and metadata crosswalks to improve access to the UL&LS’ website, databases, digital media, etc.
 
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
 
Contribute to UL&LS initiatives that further UNM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
 
 
UNM faculty must meet requirements for tenure and will participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
 
 
An earned master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent.
 
Two years of cataloging experience in an academic or research library in the past ten years.
 
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
 
Experience with RDA, NACO, and BIBCO.
 
Experience cataloging materials in foreign languages, preferably Spanish and Portuguese.
 
Knowledge of: Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM), and Encoded Archive Description (EAD) standards.
 
Knowledge of common metadata schema (XML, RDF, RDA, MARC, Library of Congress classification and Dublin Core), crosswalks, concept mapping, and interoperability issues.
 
Experience successfully supervising employees.
 
Experience conducting cataloging training.
 
Experience working with an Integrated Library System.

Description

A Librarian I performs professional library duties in any assigned area of the library, which may include overseeing the work of sub-professional library personnel. The current vacancy is in Children's Services at the Napa County Library's main branch. This selection process will establish a new list that will replace any existing lists.
 
Provide general reference and reader's advisory services to the public; explain policies and procedures to patrons and staff; conduct outreach and on-site programs for various age groups; prepare exhibits related to the needs of the community; assist and advise patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment including automated catalogs and Internet software; conduct reference searches using a variety of databases, on-line and other search techniques; participate in collection development including suggesting additional books, reference materials, audio and video tapes, electronic media and other library materials; evaluate material collections for current and potential user service needs; maintain accurate records and files for the purpose of tracking statistics associated with assigned unit; write proposals and grant requests for special library needs; prepare reports, information materials and other written materials for day-to-day work activities; direct work of paraprofessional and/or clerical support staff; represent the library in meetings with the community or special interest groups; plan and conduct programs for specific customer groups such as children, young adults or adults; maintain relationships with local schools and other community groups; select and recommend books and other materials suitable for young patrons; provide general reference services for younger patrons including those related to school assignments; maintain professional knowledge in applicable areas and keep abreast of changes in job-related trends; develop and maintain the children's collection, including books and non-print media and periodicals for circulation and reference; plan and conduct children programming such as book clubs, displays, summer reading and special events.

The Special Materials Cataloguing Librarian is a member of the Libraries professional team, reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Collection Services. The incumbent ensures that library users have rich and timely access to library materials by performing original and complex derived cataloguing for all formats, including print, non-print, and electronic formats, providing support for catalogue and collection maintenance operations and batch loading library catalogue records,

RESPONSIBILITIES

 With the Associate University Librarian, Collection Services, and other Collection Services librarians, plans, directs, and evaluates delivery of the Division’s services to users and other units of the library, balancing appropriate standards of bibliographic control and timely access to library materials.

 Works closely with the Head, Cataloguing and Collection Maintenance, in planning and supporting the operations of Cataloguing and Collection Maintenance. 

 Provides original and complex derived cataloguing for library materials in all formats and subject areas as needed, for Special Collections as well as for the general collection.

 

Develops procedures, trains staff, and provides assistance in the cataloguing of media, serials, electronic resources, theses, and other special and complex materials.

 

Performs authority control, resolves complex authority, cataloguing and post-cataloguing problems.

 

Ensures evaluation and batch loading of MARC and other metadata record sets into the catalogue.

 

Monitors cataloguing and metadata standards development and changes in cataloguing practices and policies; analyzes impact and supports changes in local practice.

 

Collaborates with Systems, and other library divisions to ensure that cataloguing policies and procedures maximize system capabilities for providing a rich discovery environment for users.

 

Participates in Library, University, and external committees and working groups.

 

Undertakes project manager roles or contributes to special assignments and projects, as assigned.

 

Keeps current with changing professional and research expectations, service requirements, and developments in academic libraries. Keeps up with new literature and research developments in areas of specialization.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

A graduate degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association, or approved equivalent education and training acceptable for membership in the Corporation of Professional Librarians of Québec.

 

Minimum of two (2) years of professional original cataloguing experience with library resources in a variety of formats, preferably in an academic or research library environment, using RDA, Library of Congress classification and subject headings, and MARC 21 formats, with demonstrated high level of cataloguing knowledge and ability.

 

Knowledge of trends and developments in metadata, academic library cataloguing, and RDA standards.

 

Knowledge of bibliographic and authority record maintenance in an automated environment.

 

Knowledge of emerging technologies to improve access to library materials, including the exposure of local catalogue information on the web.

Familiarity with processing operations relating to catalogue database maintenance, including experience with software for batch loading of library records such as MarcEdit or Excel.

 Familiarity with the cataloguing module of an integrated library system. Innovative Interfaces preferred. Familiarity with OCLC Connexion.

 Ability to effectively plan and organize multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously, including project management experience.

 Initiative and leadership skills, with willingness to collaborate, and negotiate solutions with diverse groups.

 Strong analytical and creative problem solving skills, flexibility, curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment.

Summary

Penn Libraries seeks an accomplished, energetic, service-oriented and creative librarian to serve the Univ. of Pennsylvania's Archaeology & Anthropology Museum Library. This position carries a number of responsibilities including serving as the primary library research and collections liaison to the Department of Anthropology; supporting the core curatorial areas within the Penn Museum; and supporting the museum's departments of Academic Engagement and Learning Programs. The museum librarian will:
Build current and retrospective collections in all formats; manage general and restricted endowed acquisitions funds; coordinate preservation, digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, including selection for offsite storage; and provide general and specialized research assistance for Penn Museum staff, Penn faculty and students, visiting research fellows and scholars from the US and abroad.
