With the enactment of the FAST Act, traffic and travel data are becoming more important and critical to all jurisdictions than ever before due to the continued emphasis on performance management, enhanced freight program, and new discretionary programs which are worth billions for states to compete for. In the April Talking Traffic webinar, Tianjia Tang, Chief of the Travel Monitoring and Surveys Division in FHWA's Office of Highway Policy Information (HPPI) will share with you HPPI's plan in the following areas and seek your inputs and comments.

1) Data program in FAST Act as related to highway programs

2) National and regional traffic monitoring workshops including equipment vendor exhibitions - how we move forward as we have evolved from the 1974s WIM, 1990s NATDAC, and 2000s NATMEC

3) How we bring city and county public works/traffic professionals into our community participating and contributing regularly

4) Peer to peer exchange program - offering agencies the opportunity of having national travel monitoring experts from both public agencies and private businesses to provide on-site solution orientated assistance on both technology and processes during design, construction, and operations of travel monitoring stations.

5) Research focus:

A: Freight/commodity/truck

B: Vehicle configuration-body type, axle arrangement, weight including payload and pay load by commodity type

C: Remote data collection, transmission, and processing

D: Equipment calibration and maintenance

E: Multimodal movement data collection and recording technology - motorcycle, buses, bicycle, and pedestrian

F: Others
