Dear Colleagues & Undergraduate Geography Majors,

My Environmental Tomography Laboratory has funding at $10/hr at 20 hrs/week from March 1, 2016 to July 31, 2016 for 1 - 2 undergraduate students with an interest in conducting biogeographic research using remote sensing, species niche/envelope modeling, and GIS tools.

The main focus of this study is to determine the causes of declines in local abundance of Northern Bobwhite Quail populations across a 25 state region. This project is funded by the National Bobwhite Conservation Initative (NBCI) that is housed here at the University of Tennessee in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The NBCI website is at http://bringbackbobwhites.org/ and includes this related site http://www.bobwhitefoundation.org/

The main hypothesis to be tested is that the declines in Bobwhite abundance are due to land use practices that change landcover. Consequently, the student researcher will

  * develop time series of land cover maps from historical aerial photography (at least from the 1930s) and Landsat (1972 to the present, + 43 years) satellite data for 50 - 100 sites that will be selected by 25+ experts in the 25 states and such biodiversity databases as iNaturalist, Vertnet, and GBIF.

  * For each of the 50 - 100 sites, document the change in historical land cover.
  * Communicate historical land cover change to the stakeholders and general public using an open source mapping tool like Google Earth linked to the NBCI website.
Students who have had 411 (GIS) and 413 (Remote Sensing) and Biogeography will be highly considered, but interested students in general should apply. Please contact me by e-mail or phone and sending a copy of your resume will be most helpful.

Kindest regards,

Robert A. Washington-Allen
