Stutz-McDonald to a career pursuing ways of making the air, water and land better for all. Now, the Susan E. Stutz-McDonald Scholarship Foundation (SESMSF) is celebrating her life and work with a scholarship in her memory in UT's College of Engineering. Stutz-McDonald died in 2005 after a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Her colleagues and her sister, Sally Stutz Baker, started the SESMSF in 2005 with the first major endowment being awarded to UT in 2015. The $125,000 endowment will be used to offer an annual award to a deserving female engineering student at the graduate level with a primary focus in environmental or wastewater engineering. The article, titled "Who Dropped the Bomb," examines research approaches in post-detonation forensics for potential instances of nuclear explosion. Hall is the director of INS and the Governor's Chair Professor for Nuclear Security in the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Hathaway’s project, “Toward Sustainable Urban Water Management through a Twofold Approach: Enhanced Landscape Modeling and Strategic Spatial Placement of Stormwater Control Measures,” aims to develop strategies for more effective modeling and strategic placement of green infrastructure in urban watersheds over a five-year period. Much of that encouragement starts before students even graduate from high school. Spearheading those efforts are some of the best STEM case studies: current UT students. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) chapter is hosting its third annual spring event, "Tomorrow’s Engineers Today," which gives middle school girls a chance to come to campus for a day and get hands-on experience in various types of engineering. Sponsored by Eastman, the event is scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2. The cost for students is $5. Kelli Grissom, Kristin Miranda, and Katherine Krouse—who are majoring in civil, industrial, and chemical engineering, respectively—received the news at the TSPE's banquet, which helped raise funds for area educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Featured Student: Curtis Maffei [Curtis Maffei]This week’s featured student is Curtis Maffei, a biosystems engineering major who worked as a co-op student for BAE Systems in Kingsport, Tennessee. In reporting on his rotation, Maffei worked in both the Energy Management and Facilities Maintenance Departments. While in the energy management, he was responsible for helping perform a semiannual audit with an outside organization. He also helped collect and organize energy usage data for management reviews on site. While in the facilities maintenance department, he coordinated a drinking water flow meter project from beginning to finish. His most valuable benefit received was the experience that he could take with him in his future endeavors.
