Description: The Harlan Public Library Board is seeking an innovative and
creative individual to provide vision, management and leadership to the
Harlan Community Library.  Harlan is a town of 5,100 people in south west
Iowa and has a service area of 12,000.

Essential Job Duties:
* Responsible for daily operation of the library (including maintenance and
repair of the library building, its premises and equipment)
* Responsible for the library’s written plan that projects up to 5 years
and outlines the library’s goals and objectives to meet the community’s
needs
* Responsible for monthly Board meetings and staff meetings
* Responsible for all city/county/state/federal reports
* Responsible for ordering and cataloging all new library materials
* Responsible for Adult programming
* Prepares the library to meet necessary standards
* Hires, trains and supervises staff and evaluates on an annual basis
* Selects and orders all equipment, software, electronic resources and
library furnishings
 * Researches and introduces new technology and formats into library
operations
 * Prepares and administers the budget as approved by the Library Board and
City Council
 * Reports monthly/annually to Board, City Council, Library Foundation and
County Supervisors
 * Recommends needed policies for Board action and keeps the Policy Manual
up-to-date

 Salary and Benefits: Salary is competitive based on education and
experience.  Benefits include health insurance, retirement with IPERS,
vacation, holidays, and sick leave.

Science Liaison and Reference Librarian.

The Science Liaison and Reference Librarian will develop and manage
research collections that include the  sciences, mathematics, statistics
and computer science, which combined have a materials budget of
$2,600,000. She/He
will also foster the development and expansion of research and instruction
activities to meet the information needs and support the research and
curricular goals of the University’s science programs.  The incumbent
actively engages with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas,
developing strong relationships and promoting the Library’s relevant
services and collections.

Actual assignments will be made based on the successful candidate’s
experience and interests.

This position works directly with students (graduate and undergraduate),
faculty, researchers, other University staff and administrators, University
alumni, and members of the public.

With a second Science Liaison and Reference Librarian, the incumbent in
this position develops collections housed in the Blommer Science Library
and supports the students and faculty who use that library location
primarily Blommer Science Library and is responsible for meeting the
Information needs of users in at that location. The position reports
directly to the Head of Collections, Research and Instruction.



Qualifications:

Masters in Library Science (MLS) accredited by the American Library
Association, or equivalent

Knowledge of or experience with information resources in the sciences,
math, statistics and/or computer science

Two years minimum experience in the provision of public services (reference
and instruction) in an academic or research library setting

Ability to work with diverse, research-oriented students and faculty

Desirable qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree  in the sciences,
math, statistics, computer science or related field

Other Skills: Successful performance requires analytical ability,
initiative, imagination, and excellent written and oral communication
skills, as well as a broad-based interest in and current awareness of
information technology applications for the delivery of scientific
information.
