The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.  Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Atlanta University Center – Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service and is known for transformative change in innovative services and programs.  This is evidenced by our library’s recognition in the “university library” category for the 2016 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.  To continue our excellence in program and services, the library is seeking an Assistant Department Head of Discovery and Access Services who demonstrates passion, innovation, and a commitment to the delivery of information services to our faculty and students.  The Assistant Department Head of Discovery and Access Services manages the instruction and selection, and reference and research consultation activities provided to the faculties, staff, and students of the Atlanta University Center member institutions.  This position supervises 7.5 FTE.  The Assistant Department Head participates in providing information and research services, in collection development and serves as liaison to one or more academic departments within the Atlanta University Center.  S/he will collaborate with other department heads and managers in support of the strategic initiatives of the organization.  The Assistant Department Head of Discovery and Access Services, reports to the Department Head of Discovery and Access Services.  In the absence of the department head this position will provide oversight and coordination of daily services and operations of the Discovery and Access Services Department. This position participates in evening and weekend work schedule rotations.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the instruction and selection activities of the Discovery and Access Services Department including Research Consultation Center operations
  • Hires, trains, coaches, and evaluates work performance of direct reports
  • Participates in the coordination, development, and delivery of the department’s annual work plan in support of the organization’s strategic plan
  • Develops, implements, evaluates instruction and selection and service initiatives, policies, procedures and publications;
  • In the absence of the department head coordinates the daily services and operations of the Discovery & Access Services Department
  • Maintains records and prepares statistical reports relating to the responsibilities and operations of the department
  • Manages the assessment and development of the reference collection
  • Provides reference and research services to the students and faculty AUC community for both on-site and remote library users
  • Provides curriculum-integrated, information literacy centered library instruction to students and outreach to faculty, soliciting feedback from faculty on services and programs
  • Participates in collection development activities and provides      outreach to faculty, including, serving as liaison for academic      program/departments in subject areas supporting the curriculum and      research needs of the member institutions
  • Conducts topical research seminars, and individual or group      trainings
  • Develops instructional materials, research guides, web tutorials      and other resources to optimize utilization and understanding of library      resources and services
  • Participates in grant development and implementation
  • Participates in library-wide initiatives through committees and      task forces

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years of experience  performing reference and instruction services in an academic library
  • Three years of experience working in a supervisory capacity with oversight for the work of professional staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge in interpreting and appropriately applying organization policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronic resources related to an academic research environment
  • Demonstrated experience and/or coursework in the development instruction and/or information literacy tools incorporating appropriate emerging learning technologies
  • Strong computer skills; experience with iMACs and applicable software desirable
  • Demonstrated experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Evidence of scholarship and/or professional activity
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Excellent communication skills (including writing, and public speaking)
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Great customer service ethics and high expectations for quality
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with various user groups
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to interface with internal and external customers with diplomacy and tact
  • Detail oriented with demonstrated focus on judgment, accuracy, and timeliness

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • ALA accredited MLS/MLIS degree
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in public services in an academic library
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience with the creation of virtual resources

SALARY & BENEFITS:

    Description

    The Orbis Cascade Alliance seeks applications for the position of Information Technology Manager to provide leadership in evaluating technologies and technical support of Orbis Cascade Alliance services.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Guided by the consortium’s mission, vision, values, and strategic agenda, work is non-routine and requires a creative approach to program management and leadership. This position will: provide technical support for the consortium’s Shared Integrated Library System (Shared ILS, based on the Ex Libris Alma and Primo tools), including Alma Network Zone record loading, troubleshooting, and other maintenance tasks; perform data flow monitoring, reporting, and extension of Alma and Primo through published APIs; lead support for the Alliance’s technical infrastructure, including management of local and cloud servers, content management systems/web sites, and administrative databases, which includes responsibility for vendor relations, upgrades, migration, monitoring performance, and security (desktop computing support is contracted out and not a responsibility of this position); provide technical support for the consortium’s unique and distinctive collections services, including the Encoded Archival Description database and archival collection management service; participate on teams implementing the Alliance’s Strategic Agenda, including researching, recommending, implementing, and supporting new technologies in a complex multi-state multi-institutional environment. Working in the Orbis Cascade Alliance offices in Eugene, Oregon, this position reports to the Systems Program Manager, and is an integral part of the Systems Program.

    Requirements

    Required:

    • BS or BA degree
    • Experience supporting *nix systems (Unix, Linux, etc.) in a production environment
    • Significant experience with at least one programming language
    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn:  Perl, Visual Basic, C#, Microsoft Internet Information Server, SQLite, XML, XSLT, CSS, and Javascript
    • Experience writing documentation
    • Excellent project management, analytical, customer service, oral, and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a complex and changing environment, including balancing long-term projects and being responsive to more immediate support needs
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaborate at a distance, and inspire the participation of colleagues
    • Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.

    Desired:

    • Degree(s) in computer science, library science, or related fields
    • Experience working with consortia, libraries, special collections/archives, or in higher education
    • 3+ years’ experience in server support, including experience with Web and database servers
    • Experience with a library management system (ILS) product
    • Experience with a library discovery product
    • Knowledge of the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data
