Engineering
Departments Named Key Players in $30 Million Consortium
UT’s study of nuclear engineering and scintillation materials got a significant boost with a research group being named
a major player in a $30 million consortium sponsored by the US Department of Energy. Backed by the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Nuclear Science and Engineering Nonproliferation Research Consortium is aiming to create a pipeline of new talent
and generate new concepts and technologies in basic and applied nuclear science that can be transferred to the national laboratories.

Research
Taking a Shot at Improving Solar Energy
SunShot might sound like the next wave of NASA missions, or perhaps even the latest weapon of a James Bond villain, but
it’s a US Department of Energy research initiative that holds the potential to reshape the way we think about, gather, and use solar energy. The SunShot National Laboratory Multiyear Partnership recently awarded a $2.3 million, thirty-six-month project to
UT’s College of Engineering and its collaborators.

Alternative
Summer Break Planned in Cuba
The College of Engineering's Global Initiatives program will host an alternative summer break trip to Cuba May 11-18,
2016. Students will stay in the historic center of Old Havana, explore the culture, and complete playground and school repairs. Visits are also planned to museums and a national Eco project, as well as a "tobacco tour" and a boat tour through the Vinales Caves.

Astronaut Sandra
Magnus to speak at UTSI
Dr. Sandra "Sandy" Magnus will give a presentation entitled "Perspectives from Space" at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, in the auditorium
of the UT Institute (UTSI). Her presentation will encompass stories, experiences and perspectives gained over her years as an astronaut. served sixteen years in the NASA Corps. Magnus flew two shuttle missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and served
on the ISS as a member of Expedition 18 for four and a half months.

Speak on "The Secret Handshake" at UTSI
Col. Rodney F. Todaro, USAF, and Commander AEDC AFMC, Arnold AFB, will give a seminar entitled, "The Secret Handshake" at 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, February 10, in room H-111 at the UT Space Institute (UTSI. Col Todaro will discuss the "Universal Truths" of flight and ground test, as well as general advice on management and leadership gained through his experience as a flight test professional
for the Air Force over the last sixteen years. He also will relate some real world examples to these "Universal Truths" and advice.

at TVA; Kim Greene, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Southern Company; Anda Ray, senior vice president at Electric Power Research Institute; and Jennifer Cistola, senior vice president at CableLabs, will visit CURENT to meet with students

Dr. Roald Hoffman will speak on "The Chemical Imagination at Work in Very Tight Places" in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
Eugene P. Wigner Distinguished Lecture Series at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, in the Iran Thomas Auditorium at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source. Hoffman is the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus at Cornell University and a 1981 Nobel

Pursuit Calls
for Submissions
Pursuit is an international, multidisciplinary journal of undergraduate research, based here at UT. The
journal accepts advanced, original research-based submissions from undergraduate students in all academic disciplines, and graduates may submit their work within one year of their graduation date. Research-based term papers are also considered. The final submission
deadline is February 7, 2016.

The American Public Power Association (APPA) awards several types of scholarships each year to university students as part
of its Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) Program. APPA is the service organization for the nation's community-owned electric utilities. DEED is APPA's research program that funds innovative, energy-related research.

Multicultural Student Life
The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:
The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.
The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two textbooks free of charge. Students must return the borrowed
books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.
The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate
those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.
The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.
Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.
Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule

Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule
for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
