It is that time of year again.  If you have any students that question you about VA benefits being taxable or if they are able to claim an Education Credit such as the American Opportunity Credit, please refer them to their tax professional or to the IRS.

Also, if any student has a VA debt that has been in collection over 90 days and they do not have a payment plan set-up, their IRS refund may be offset by the VA debt. Authority for the offset comes from the Debt Collection Act of 1982 and the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996. If they ask questions regarding a debt, please refer them to the VA Debt Management Center (DMC) at: http://www1.va.gov/DEBTMAN/index.asp
