HEAD OF YOUTH SERVICES
Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County
Anniston, Alabama

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Full-time vacancy available for an energetic, team-oriented Youth Services Librarian with a strong public service commitment. Provide library service and programming for children and teens.

DUTIES:

*         Plans and conducts preschool story time on a weekly basis.
*         Plans and conducts summer reading programs for children and teens.
*         Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.
*         Ensures the departmental collections include relevant resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of the children and teens in the community.
*         Communicates with home schoolers, teachers, students, parents and community members to help improve library service.
*         Plans and conducts special programs after school or around holidays.
*         Hires special performers in conjunction with the summer reading programs.
*         Assists library patrons, primarily youth and their parents, in finding material they want, answering reference questions, and providing reader's advisory.
*         Plans for and orders craft supplies and any other items needed for programming.
*         Organizes and gives tours of the library and its services to school groups, etc.
*         Promotes and publicizes the services, programs, and resources of the children's and teen's departments. Prepares flyers, brochures, and press releases for programs.
*         Manages the selection, ordering and weeding of departmental materials consistent with the library's mission and policies.
*         Responsible for order and appearance of the children's and teen's collections and environment.
*         Compiles statistics on attendance of all programs monthly, including the summer reading program.
*         Supervises and schedules employees assigned to the children and teen departments.
*         Deals tactfully and courteously with the public. Upholds all confidentiality rights of patrons and patron records.
*         Upholds established library policies and procedures.
*         Has a cooperative team spirit.
*         Attends and participates in professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature.

*         Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluatin=
g the overall children's and youth services.

*         As opportunities arise, educate the public about the value of pub=
lic libraries and the profession. Creatively promote library services and t=
he profession.

*         Communicates with Director regarding the operations of the childr=
en's and teen's departments.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:


*         Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of=
 children and teens.

*         Ability to translate children and teen needs and interests into e=
ffective library services and programs.

*         Knowledge of current trends in library services for children and =
teens.

*         Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information tec=
hnology, Internet and database search capabilities.

*         Knowledge on how to conduct a story time appropriate for preschoo=
l children, using stories, songs, finger plays, action rhymes, puppets, etc=
.

*         Ability to organize, plan and conduct programs for the entire yea=
r, well in advance of carrying them out.

*         Ability to communicate effectively with children, teens, parents,=
 and staff and all library patrons orally and in writing, including e-mail.

*         Ability to identify funding sources and pursue sponsorships and g=
rants.

ABILITIES:


*         Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships wi=
th co-workers, patrons, and community organizations.

*         Able to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and i=
ndependent judgement in a variety of situations

*         Able to learn and stay current with emerging technology.

*         Must be able to lift and carry bags of books or boxes weighing up=
 to 40 pounds.

*         Must be able to speak distinctly to large groups

*         Must be able to drive a car and hold a valid driver's license.

*         Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

*         Must possess physical mobility involving bending, lifting, readin=
g, and hearing.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:


*         Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program=
 highly desired.

*         One or more years of professional experience in a library setting=
, with supervisory or administrative experience preferred.

*         Experience working with children and/or teens.
