LIBRARY DIRECTOR – BRANCH DISTRICT LIBRARY, SOUTH-CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Manage six unique libraries as a single, unified system in South Central Michigan! The Branch District Library Board of Trustees seeks a progressive and original leader who can and will capitalize on the Library’s 2015 millage success and create a sound forward-thinking plan for the Library’s future. The Library staff (37 employees, 23 FTE) serves the 46,905 citizens of Branch County and Allen Township in Hillsdale County with a $1.6 million operating budget. The Branch District Library was formed in 1991 by combining the resources and services of individual public libraries in Coldwater, Algansee, Bronson, Quincy, Sherwood, and Union Township. Branches of the District Library remain active in those communities, each of which has its own unique character, community support, programs and services. The challenge for the new Director will be to help the Library and its services flourish with its communities, move forward with innovation to restore hours and services and become recognized as the community resource. The District collaborates with the Woodlands Library Cooperative and other agencies to provide technology, special programs and much more.
Branch County is located in southern Michigan, half way between Chicago and Detroit along the Old Sauk Trail, also known as the U.S. 12 Heritage Route. With warm small town hospitality, Coldwater (the county seat) and the surrounding communities offer festivals, shopping, restaurants and more than 100 area lakes for fishing and recreational activities—all amid very diverse and affordable housing options. Cultural amenities include the historical Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater—the second oldest theater in Michigan—offering near perfect acoustics in an intimate 499-seat setting. The theater offers a fine array of performances throughout the year and has developed an outstanding reputation for its Summer Theatre performances. Branch County is served by five school districts and two colleges—Baker College and Kellogg Community College. The area has a healthy and expanding economy, including the recently announced Clemens Food Group’s $225 million investment in a new pork production facility. For more about the communities and the Library see Branch Links.
Responsibilities. The Director reports to a seven-member Library Board of Trustees and under the broad policy guidance and direction from the Board, performs professional and administrative duties in planning, developing, implementing, and directing public library services for the Branch District Library. These duties include personnel management, budget preparation and financial management, policy and project development, facilities management, and community relations. The Director will work effectively with elected officials at the local, township and state level; and with the media, stakeholder groups, and the communities to enhance the Library’s image as the heart of the county.
Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program; four years of experience as an administrator/director or as a department head for a public library (or equivalent); and the ability to obtain and retain Michigan Certification Level 1. Essential attributes and skills include: excellent communication and organizational skills; the ability and desire to plan, develop, and administer the activities of a public library; supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Board, staff and community stakeholders; and an understanding and appreciation of public library best practices in the areas of intellectual freedom, collections, and library technologies. Successful experience as a library director reporting to a governing board, experience leading and implementing a strategic planning process and experience with a successful millage campaign are highly desirable.
Compensation. The salary range is $62,000 to $74,000 (with placement dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.

Director—Natrona County Public Library — Casper, Wyoming
Literacy, Education and a Thriving Community—if these excite you, the Natrona County Public Library wants you as its next Library Director! Join the Natrona County Public Library Board of Trustees and the nearly 81,000 Natrona County residents as NCPL and the community move into a period of expansion and growth. The successful Director will engage the community in continuing to provide a doorway to learning and literacy services and programs through the Main library in Casper, the Mills and Edgerton branches, a bookmobile and the books-by-mail program. Governed by a five-member Board of Trustees (appointed by the Board of County Commissioners), the Library is supported by a dedicated, progressive staff of 35 FTEs, a $2.9 million annual budget, and strong community services and programs. The Director is responsible for implementing policies and plans and providing for the effective operation of the system. Opportunities include exploring the possibilities and potentially developing a plan for funding and renovating its current facility and/or embarking on a capital campaign for a new facility, increasing the use of technology services for patrons, and continuing to develop new community partnerships. The successful Director will also work with and support the ongoing work of the Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library.
Natrona County has a rich heritage tied with American migration along the California, Oregon, Mormon Pioneer trails, Pony Express route, ranching-western lore, and the freewheeling boom-and-bust of the oil business. Located in Wyoming’s central plateau, the County’s 5,342 square miles include the municipalities of Casper (the county seat and second largest metropolitan area in the state), Midwest, Edgerton, Mills, Evansville, and Bar Nunn. The area’s economy is tied to natural resources, notably energy and agriculture. A pattern of boom and bust in the energy industry has made Casper’s business leaders aware of the need to diversify the economy and Casper has emerged as Wyoming’s business, financial, manufacturing, and retail center. As a result of its central location the area currently is experiencing vitality as Wyoming’s meeting place and transportation hub. Outdoor recreation remains an important industry and avocation—Alcova and Pathfinder reservoirs provide boating facilities, Casper Mountain hosts winter sports, Hogadon Ski Area offers three 600-foot vertical runs for skiers, a world class Biathlon and Nordic ski Center, golfers have access to four area courses and Casper Whitewater Park is a one half mile stretch of the North Platte River with four man-made rock features. Hunting and fishing are popular with residents and out-of-state visitors, many of them guided by local outfitters. Natrona County is proud of its “choice based” school district and the presence of Casper College and University of Wyoming Casper. For additional information on the area’s recreational, educational and cultural amenities see Natrona links.
Responsibilities. Under the general oversight of the Library Board of Trustees, the Director plans, manages and directs the operations, programs, services, and personnel of the Natrona County Public Library System. Key responsibilities include: managing and directing library operations; ensuring high quality library programs and services; developing and maintaining short and long term plans for the Library; representing the Library and coordinating departmental activities with other divisions, departments, outside agencies, community organizations and the media; and staying abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public library management. Please see the full Library Director Job Description for primary duties and responsibilities, desired skills and additional details.
Qualifications. The position requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science and five years of experience overseeing public library operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required knowledge includes: principles and practices of public library system administration; public library policies, procedures and standards of service; Federal, State and Local regulations governing library operations; current trends in library services, programming and technology; methods for evaluating public library programs, policies and operational requirements; processes for developing and administering budgets; and supervisory principles, practices and methods. Prior success reporting to a governing board is highly desirable.
Compensation. The position offers a hiring salary range of $85,000 - $99,800 (dependent upon experience and qualifications) and an attractive benefits package.
For further information, contact Bradbury Associates/Gossage Sager Associates via email or phone. Apply via email with a meaningful cover letter and your resume as Word or pdf attachments to Dan Bradbury. This position closes January 24, 2016.
