Purpose and Scope

The Chair, Research and Education Services (R&ES) holds the faculty rank of Associate Professor and serves as Library department head responsible for providing quality reference, education, consultative, liaison, and general user services, and for providing outreach services to nontraditional library clientele. The Chair, R&ES reports to the Director of Libraries, and supervises 5 faculty and 1 part-time staff in a continuous learning environment.

 

Qualifications

The Chair, Research and Education Services must have a masters degree from an ALA accredited institution, AHIP certification preferred, and have the ability to function as a faculty member in the areas of education, research/scholarship and service. The following knowledge and skills are needed in order to effectively carry out the duties of this position:

·       management and supervisory experience and abilities, including strong communication, interpersonal, and strategic planning skills

·          ability to teach effectively to a diverse audience

·          5 years experience in a health sciences library environment

·       extensive knowledge of health sciences resources, tools, vocabulary and research techniques, including evidence based techniques

·       thorough knowledge of the concepts of information organization, storage, retrieval and transfer, including the application of computer, instructional, and other technologies of information management

·       familiarity with the academic health center environment and the role of the library within it

·          a commitment to responsive and innovative service in an environment that focuses on customers

 

Administrative Responsibilities

The Chair, R&ES serves as part of a planning team, participates in the development of the strategic plan, and continually assesses and implements the R&ES programs and priorities in relation to the strategic plan. He or she responds to the University Librarian’s requests for information, reports, and decisions.

 

The Chair, R&ES provides leadership to the faculty and staff of R&ES by serving as a role model for quality customer service, informing and becoming informed of library and campus issues, by demonstrating principles of team decision making and accountability, by evaluating performance and providing sufficient opportunities for professional growth and development, and providing guidance for development and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs.

 

Operational Responsibilities

The Chair, R&ES provides oversight of the R&ES programs of reference, education, outreach and general user services, and shares leadership through example, inspiration, motivation and mentoring and assumes the following duties:

·          Shares leadership for educational programs to deliver instruction in  support of information literacy, evidence based healthcare, and other curriculum related activities, including multimedia collection development

·          Manages the programs developed top delivering instruction and information to support clinical activities on campus and for Georgia Health Sciences Health System.

·          Manages the programs to provide library services for distance education and nontraditional library users remote from campus

·          Collaborates with other faculty and staff who support the programs of R&ES and other related services such as specialized database or web page development, consumer health resources and services and clinical consult services.

·          Answers users’ reference questions by phone, mail, remotely and by referral

·          Assists other library faculty and staff to learn and update their knowledge about library resources, information tools, and finding evidence-based information for patient care and research

·          Provides formal and informal consultations, in depth assistance, or searches for unusual, difficult, or complex questions

·          Prepares and teaches instructional resource and information literacy sessions

 

Intra institutional Responsibilities

The Chair, R&ES serves as a liaison to selected units and departments of Augusta University, and serves on various other committees to fulfill responsibilities as a member of the Corps of Instruction.

 

Institutional Cooperation and Agreements

The Chair, R&ES is active professionally in the local, regional, and national associations for librarians and information scientists.
