Historical Collections Project Assistant

This is a temporary position, available starting immediately.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented person to learn and apply new skills, work with a fascinating collection that has already attracted interest within UNC and beyond, and directly contribute to making this collection available to scholars.  The collection (stored in archival boxes) consists of post-1801 medical theses, in multiple languages, from leading medical schools throughout the world.

Principal Responsibilities
After orientation and training:

  *   Reviewing box contents, adjusting the contents or box description as needed
  *   Handling fragile theses, cleaning and sorting into logical groups, scanning title pages, occasionally placing individual theses in archival envelopes, and re-boxing
  *   Barcoding each box, recording barcodes and box contents in an Excel spreadsheet
  *   Applying newly generated contents labels to the boxes
  *   Other project-related duties as assigned

Required

·         High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience

  *   Ability to lift heavy boxes (20-50 lbs each) and push loaded book trucks
  *   Ability to operate computers, printers and scanners
  *   Demonstrated attention to detail
  *   Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is likely


Desired

  *   Familiarity with one or more foreign languages
  *   Basic familiarity with MS Excel
  *   Demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude for problem-solving, acquiring new skills, synthesizing information, and working effectively with others
  *   Demonstrated time management, interpersonal, and communication skills

Organizational Relationships
This position will be part of the Resources Management Services department in the Health Sciences Library and report to the Special Collections Librarian.

Schedule, Salary and Benefits
Position available now and runs through June 30, 2016, with a possible extension dependent on the availability of funding.  The number of hours per week is flexible but is expected to range from a minimum of 20 hours per week to a maximum of 40 hours per week.  Hours worked should be standard work week, Mon-Fri, 8-5. The salary is $10.61/hr.  Position is temporary and does not include benefits.

The Health Sciences Library serves faculty, students, and staff in schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Global Public Health; UNC Health Care system, which includes a 680-bed teaching hospital; and North Carolina AHEC - the statewide program for health professional education. The library provides a unique presentation of Internet-accessible electronic resources and services through the HSL web site<http://www.hsl.unc.edu>, the AHEC Digital Library<http://library.ncahec.net/>, and NC Health Info<http://www.nchealthinfo.org/>.

The mission of the Resources Management Services department is to successfully provide access to information needed by library patrons, increasingly in digital formats. The department includes acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, document delivery, preservation/binding, and special collections.
