College of Social Work Announces
Sixth Faculty Member to Join One of Several Prestigious
Scientific Academies
Dr. John Orme was recently selected to become a Fellow in the
American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. Orme joins a growing number of faculty scholars who are fellows in esteemed academies. There will be
an induction ceremony for new fellows at the Society for Social Work Research (SSWR) Conference in January 2016. "John Orme is a leader in our college and a scholar whose ideas are impacting the social work field," explains Dean of the college, Karen Sowers.
In addition to Dr. John Orme, the following faculty members have been honored previously by academies:

Dr. Charles Glisson, former Director of the college's Children's Mental Health Services Research Center, is also a Fellow of the
American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

Dr. Uma Rao, Director of the college's Children's Mental Health Services Research Center, is an
American Psychiatric Association Fellow and a Distinguished Fellow of the
American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr. Karen M. Sowers, Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work, is a Scholar Fellow of the
National Academies of Practice.

Dr. Elizabeth Strand, Director of the Veterinary Social Work program, is a Fellow of the
National Academies of Practice.

Dr. Sherry Cummings, Associate Dean of the College of Social Work, is a Fellow of the
Gerontological Society of America

The American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare is an honorific society of distinguished scholars and practitioners dedicated to achieving
excellence in the field of social work and social welfare through high-impact work that advances social good. They have invited Dr. John G. Orme to become a fellow of the Academy.
John G. Orme's substantive interest and expertise are in the area of foster care, and especially foster families. His methodological interests and
expertise are in the development and testing of measures for social work practice and research, applied statistical issues, and outcome-informed evidence-based practice.

Dr. Charles Glisson's research focuses on the organization and delivery of social and mental health services to children and families.
Dr. Glisson is the founder of the Children's Mental Health Services Research Center, a research center funded by the National Institute of Mental
Health. Glisson received the National Association of Social Work's 2013 Ruth Knee-Milton Wittman Award for Lifetime Achievement in Health and Mental Health Practice. Glisson was inducted into the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare several years
ago.

Dr. Uma Rao, the Betsey R. Bush Endowed Professor in Behavioral Health, is an
American Psychiatric Association Fellow and a Distinguished Fellow of the
American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. She is the Director of the Children's Mental Health Services Research Center. The long-term goals
of Dr. Rao's research program are to develop and test more specific and effective preventive and treatment interventions for early-onset mood and addictive disorders, and thereby assist at-risk youth to achieve their full potential as adults.
Dr. Rao has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as private foundations for her research. She has also received
awards from the Indo-American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Karen M. Sowers is Dean of the College of Social Work of the University of Tennessee. She is the Alvin and Sally Beaman Endowed Professor at
the college. Her research interests are: Juvenile Justice; Sexuality; Social Work Education; Child Welfare; Mental Health - Evidence-based Practice; International Social Work Practice.

Dr. Elizabeth Strand is the Founding Director of Veterinary Social Work (VSW) and the “All Creatures Great and Small” Endowed Clinical Associate
Professor at the University of Tennessee Colleges of Social Work and Veterinary Medicine.
Strand's research interests include, the link between human and animal violence, animal related grief and bereavement, animal assisted interactions,
compassion fatigue, animals in family systems, the scholarly and practice development of veterinary social work, communication skills, conflict resolution, and stress management techniques in animal welfare environments, wellness among animal related professionals,
and the human side of animal welfare.

Dr. Sherry Cummings, Associate Dean of the College of Social Work, is a Fellow of the
Gerontological Society of America
Cummings' research interests include: Aging and mental health; substance abuse and older adults; caregiver issues; gerontological social work education.
Along with have been a Fellow Gerontological Society of America since 2008, Cummings is Past-President of
The Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW)
