UT Study Finds China's Newfound Mobility Increasingly Reliant on E-Bikes<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_11_13_15.html#>
UT researchers have been studying the use of e-bikes in China, and their new findings shed light on the demographic and geographic use of the new technology.

"Overall usage has been studied before, but this is one of the first times that people have drilled the data down to geographically defined areas and looked at trends over time," said Chris Cherry, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. "China is a good case study for investigating e-bikes as a transformative mode of transportation, particularly in urban areas."

[Richard Bennett]

Bennett Speaks on Bridge Strength<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_11_13_15.html#>
Dr. Richard Bennett made a presentation entitled "Optimizing Bridge Strength–Testing of Scaled Bridge Ties With and Without Ports for Borate Inserts" at the Railway Tie Association Meeting, November 3-5, in Tucson, Arizona. The presentation was co-authored by Dr. Adam Taylor, associate professor of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries; Julia-Katharina Neier, exchange student from University of Applied Sciences, Salzburg; and Dr. Jeff Lloyd, Nisus Corporation. The interior of large bridge timbers are hard to treat with preservatives. One very effective means of treatment is to drill holes in the timber and allow borate treatments to diffuse through the timber. This presentation examined the effect of the holes on the strength of the timber, with the conclusion being that the strength loss was minimal, and the additional preservative was well worth the minor strength loss from the holes.

Featured Student: Daniel Whitcomb

[Daniel Whitcomb]This week's featured student is Daniel Whitcomb, a chemical engineering major from Nashville, Tennessee, who worked at Dow's Polyethylene B plant on their site in Plaquemine, Louisiana. His responsibilities included organizing moisture data from the warehouse, building spreadsheets for creating reports, finding unregistered insulated pipes on P & ID's, measuring pits and dikes, creating flowsheets on Aspen, SSIS audits for pressure safety valves and learning the processes of the plant.

Whitcomb had no idea what it was like to work in a plant before this assignment, and he finally had an understanding of the kind of job he could have as a chemical engineer. The experience of working in the plant was invaluable as it allowed him to judge what kind of job positions he would like to try. This was a wonderful experience and he looks forward to his next coop rotational assignment in the near future.
