Job Description

SCHEDULE:   Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekend.

                                                                                                                                                                          

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to supervise the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department and decide how best to provide access for Knox County Patrons to material not held in system (borrowing from another library, print on demand, e-books, etc.).  Duties include, but are not limited to: working with Knox County ILL patrons’ requests; verifying, finding lenders, negotiating loans, and requesting material be added to the collection; and performing additional duties assigned by the Reference Services Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned. Acts as a member of the Reference team by working reference desk, attending meetings, keeping skills up-to-date on using reference books and databases. Makes ILL policies that guide system wide decisions about how much a patron can borrow, select lenders, negotiate replacement of lost material, and how these polices are applied to fellow staff members and patrons. Provides ILL access including digital services such as print on demand, e-books, etc. Works with patrons to explain policies, clarify requests and track down over dues. Prepares incoming material for patrons, notifying them and arranging pick up locations. Works with borrowing libraries, explains policies, clarifies their requests, and tracks over dues. Works with other departments in the system, branches, Sights & Sounds, and McClung to provide maximum access to the library collection to our ILL partners. Supervises, balances the work in the department and defines areas where each department member’s responsibilities lie. Provides answers to specific questions, research assistance and/or appropriate referrals to meet the informational needs of Knox County citizens. Conducts reference interviews with people of various social, economic and educational levels via telephone, letter, e-mail and in person. Instructs the public and staff in the use of the Library’s online catalog and reference databases, and in the use of other computer applications such as; internet and Microsoft Office. Conducts Library tours, speaks to community groups about Library topics, represents the Library at meetings of community groups, serves on Library committees and tasks groups as needed. Assists in building and maintaining the Library’s collection, especially the online information provided via the Library’s information portal.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Assigned to one or more specialized tasks within the Reference Department. Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; with three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in a Library environment, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer, printer, telephone, copier, fax machine, calculator, postage meter and scanner.  Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
