GIS Intern

HYPE Products, LLC, the US distributor of fastest growing energy drink in the United States, is seeking a student intern to assist with implementing our growth strategy. We need help synthesizing and presenting various forms of business and economic data including customer lists, demographic/census data, distributor territories, etc.  Outputs will include layered maps, heat maps, spatial selection data sets, and route definitions that will impact our business decisions.  Success will require being able to work with established datasets and company lists as well as discovering or developing data of interest.  

Work for this paid internship will be at our US headquarters located adjacent to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Position Description:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Provides GIS support for sales, marketing and operations of an Energy Drink distributor. See ushype.com for more information about the company.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

• Utilizes GIS software as appropriate for the task.
• Creates mapping documents for company staff.
• Provides statistics and analytical support for the company.
• Creates GIS data layers in vector and raster format.
• Maintains and organizes data within GIS.
• Respond in a timely manner to internal and external phone calls, text messages and e-mails.
• Position requires the use of judgment to plan, perform; general decisions are made to solve a problem or select a course of action for a standard or recognized method of operation.
• Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic economic geography.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from of co-workers and managers.


WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and concepts.
• Competent in using printers, plotters, and scanners.
• Proficient in technical cartographic skills, and general business software.
• Motivated to learn skills related to business economics, GIS cartography, and GIS analysis.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelors or Masters candidate in Geography including course work in GIS and Economic Geography.
• Recommendation of Geography Department faculty.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee may lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
