Governor
Appoints UT Alumnus John Tickle to Board of Trustees
Businessman, philanthropist and UT College of Engineering graduate John D. Tickle has been appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam
to serve on the UT Board of Trustees. Tickle is chairman of Strongwell Corporation and a 1965 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. The John D. Tickle Engineering Building was funded in part by a gift from Tickle and his wife, Ann.

College
of Engineering to Announce $150 Million Fundraising Goal
The College of Engineering announced October 9 that it is undertaking an ambitious drive to raise $150 million. The college,
now in its 177th year, is making the drive to secure its continued success and has raised $101 million of the target since the effort informally kicked off in 2012. The campaign also serves as a way for the college to emphasize its value to the university,
the region, and the state.

Jacobs and ATA recently made a donation to the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) to bring the Millard Oakley
STEMmobile owned and operated by Tennessee Tech University (TTU) to the UTSI campus. The STEMmobile will be the centerpiece for STEM week May 16 - 22, 2016.

Study Investigates
Gap in Fuel Economy Estimates
A new study released October 1 from UT’s Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy indicates that the gap between government fuel
economy estimates and what consumers are reporting has increased for recent model year vehicles. Dr. David Greene, one of the authors of the study, is a senior fellow in the Energy and Environmental Policy program at the Baker Center and a research professor
with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Liu to Speak in CBE
Lecture
Dr. Julie Liu will speak on "Protein-based Biomaterials for Stem Cell Differentiation and Surgical Adhesive Applications" at 9:40 a.m.

on Metallic Crystals
Dr. Subhash Mahajan will speak on "Formation of Deformation Twins in Metallic Crystals" at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, in Room 307

Tech 'CarniVol' Offers
UT, High School Students Chance to Shine
Students with a penchant for tinkering have an opportunity to shine thanks to Tech CarniVol, a new event to be held during Engineer's
Day on Oct. 22. Tech CarniVol is an engineering festival designed and organized by UT students to help spotlight STEM education and its impact beyond engineering. It will feature competitions in robotics, business, coding and computer security, and is open
to all UT students as well as area high school students. Extended deadline for event registration: October 16.

The thirty-fifth Sharing Adventures in Engineering and Science (SHADES) conference, sponsored by the Greater Knoxville Math/Science
Coalition, will be held 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 PM Saturday October 31, 2015, in Room 105 of the Claxton Education Building in UT's National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS), 1122 Volunteer Boulevard. This conference is for female sixth
and seventh grade students and their math and science teachers. The program consists of highly interactive, demonstration-oriented presentations, and exhibits on science and engineering topics.

DOE Honors Rocha
as Part of "Women@Energy" Series
The accolades continue to roll in for Andrea Rocha, a postdoctoral research fellow on the team of UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor's
Chair Dr. Terry Hazen. Rocha was selected by the US Department of Energy for its "Women@Energy" series, detailing inspirational
women in STEM fields to highlight what inspired the women to pursue their careers. The overall goal of the program is to get women to consider STEM-related courses in college and in the workforce.

in Making Efficient Future
Two graduate research assistants in the College of Engineering are creating a more efficient future for the research community. Nima
Tamaddoni, a PhD student in mechanical engineering, and Graham Taylor, a PhD student in biomedical engineering, are starting their own company, T&T Scientific Corp. The company is intended to assist researchers who work in different fields including bioengineering,
electrophysiology, biophysics and molecular biology.

To better prepare students for work in industry, the Reliability & Maintainability Center (RMC) is offering free training on reliability
analytics and practical applications to complement what is being learned in the current Reliability and Maintainability core RME academic courses. This will be done with a series of evening sessions through April 2016. Invites will be sent to students that
plan to do internships. Examples of topics will be reliability data collection & mining, Weibull analysis and basic reliability modeling capabilities and benefits.

Under Way for IIE
A VOLstarter site is now open to help out the Institution of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Chapter at the University of Tennessee.
The IIE seeks assistance in sending students to the 2015 IIE Regional Conference. A strong networking and growth opportunity for students, this conference not only jump-starts student's careers but also allows them to get a first-hand look at industrial engineering.

Applications are Open
Applications are open for the 2015 Construction Financial Management Association Scholarship. Scholarships are available to juniors,
seniors, or graduate students who are majoring in accounting, construction or other related construction fields such as engineering or architecture. Students must be either from the Middle Tennessee area or attending a university in the Middle Tennessee area. Applications

Diplomacy Lab research projects offer benefits for faculty and students, from future research to potential jobs for graduates. The
Diplomacy Lab enables the State Department to "course-source" research and innovation related to foreign policy by harnessing the efforts of students and faculty at universities across the country. The lab investigates real issues needing research, and participating
students and faculty will connect with those in the field who will use the results to inform policy. Those interested in proposing to address any of these

UT will host its annual health fair 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, in the Panhellenic Building on Cumberland Avenue. Representatives

Featured Student: Trey Twickler

Trey Twickler, a mechanical engineer major, worked for Baylor Technology Services in the Polyurethanes area in Baytown, Texas. He learned about the structure of a large, internationally renowned company, its values, and the challenges with it. Twickler gained
knowledge on many new technical skills, such as reading and drawing P&IDs, SAP, and PI Process book. He was also able to improve on his public speaking skills.

- Materials characterization techniques such as optical, electron, and physical microscopy/spectroscopy and other thin film or nanostructure characterization techniques; Electro -dynamic, -static and -chemical characterization techniques and analyses;
- Hands-on experience in a chemical and characterization laboratory setting and;
- Mechanical experience used in the conception, design and fabrication of experimental systems

Multicultural Student Life
The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:
The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.
The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two textbooks free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the
end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.
The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate
those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.
The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.
Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.
