Featured Student: Blake McDavid

[Blake McDavid]

Blake McDavid, a mechanical engineering major from Kingsport, Tennessee, worked as a co-op student at BMW Manufacturing Company in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

McDavid worked in MN-31 which is responsible for the supplier quality of software, interior, and electric components. Some of his responsibilities as a co-op included: problem solving quality issues with external QMTs and suppliers, supporting prufecubing and line trial events, and performing product and process audits at suppliers.

The most valuable benefit he received by accepting his co-op was gaining experience in a real-world working environment and networking with individuals who have had very successful careers in automotive engineering.

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, 865-974-5323, or 110 Perkins Hall. Also, please follow Engineering Professional Practice on Twitter<https://twitter.com/UTprofpractice> and Instagram<https://instagram.com/UTEngrProfessionalPractice> for updates on co-op and internship programs.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu<http://www.coop.utk.edu/>, clicking "Resource Library" (on the left margin) and selecting "Students at Work–In Their Own Words." Careers in Patents for Engineers and Scientists
2:00–3:00 p.m. November 5, 2015
Center for Career Development, Room 229-201 Student Union
Workshop
If you have (or will soon have) a degree in engineering, computer sciences, or the hard sciences (chemistry, biology, physics and related disciplines), you can take the Patent Office's Registration Exam to become a Patent Agent. Patent agents can make up to $20,000 a year more than similarly situated engineers and scientists. The Exam is available virtually on-demand via computer. Becoming a patent agent can also be a step toward the even more lucrative career of becoming a Patent Attorney.

If this sounds intriguing, come join Practicing Law Institute (PLI) for a presentation by Mark Dighton, PLI's Director of Law School Relations and a Director of their Patent Office Exam Course. Topics for discussion include:

  * Careers for patent agents (what the work is like and where you find it),
  * The qualities and skills that will make you happy and successful in this field (e.g., communication skills), and
  * The latest info on the Patent Office's Registration Exam (who can take it, how it works, and recommendations on how to study for this very difficult Exam).
