Daviess County (KY) Public Library Director position open!

 

The Board of Trustees of the Daviess County Public Library (headquartered in Owensboro, KY) seeks an experienced and innovative dynamo who is responsive to community needs and can lead a team of creative and talented staff. This vibrant Library (an independent taxing district) serves 98,000 people with a staff of 46 FTEs, a $4 million budget, and strong auxiliary support from the Friends and Library Foundation. The Library circulates 750,000+ items annually and has 79,673 registered card holders.

 

Owensboro, “BBQ capital of the world,” is the county seat of Daviess County and the fourth largest city in Kentucky. Located on the southern bank of the Ohio River, Owensboro offers many outdoor recreation opportunities, an active and varied arts community, and is the home of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.  Owensboro is known as a Festival City with wonderful family-oriented activities and events to attend throughout the year. Responsibilities. Under the direction of the Library Board, the Library Director is responsible for identifying, planning, organizing, executing and evaluating an effective library program for the community. Qualifications. A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited graduate library school (eligibility for Professional Level I KY certification); and a minimum of three years (seven years or more preferred) of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.   Essential attributes include experience in staff management, budget administration and working in a non-profit, community-based environment; excellent public relations skills with the Library patrons, the general public and the media; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the board and staff; well-developed organizational skills; excellent knowledge of and ability with computerized library methods and services; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices.  Successful director experience reporting to a governing board and experience working on a building project are preferred.

 

Compensation.  The starting salary range is $96,299-$110,684 (placement being dependent on experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.

The Harriet F. Oversees Youth Services collection development including print and electronic materials under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, and contributes to system wide collection development areas, including responsibility for expending a designated portion of Youth Services materials budget; purging obsolete and worn materials; and making recommendations for replacement materials. Develops plans for Youth Services programming to ensure adequate number of programs for children and their caregivers are provided and effectively promotes programs using system resources. Acts as person in charge and mediates customer service issues in the absence of location manager. Discusses with supervisor work methods, problems, short- and long-range developments and/or plans. Actively participates in Youth Services Council and coordinated programming among all locations as determined by the Youth Services Coordinator, and makes recommendations for programs, policies, and procedures. Promotes library Youth Services and programs through, but not limited to public outreach such as informational fairs, school and/or child care center visits, and writing occasional articles as requested. Compiles, prepares and maintains departmental reports, records, statistics, and budget information. Participates in professional training and activities to keep current on issues and trends and to further professional development. Provides Youth Services training under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, including, but not limited to:  Children's literature, puppetry, storytelling, book talking, programming skills, reader's advisory and reference. Participates in planning special events, including but not limited to: Summer Reading Club, Children's Book Week, and Teen Read Week, and other special events. Maintains an attractive and inviting department. Works collaboratively with community agencies serving youth. Science Liaison and Reference Librarian- Collections, Research & Instruction

The Science Liaison and Reference Librarian will develop and manage research collections that include the sciences, mathematics, statistics and computer science, which combined have a materials budget of $2,600,000. She/He will also foster the development and expansion of research and instruction activities to meet the information needs and support the research and curricular goals of the University’s science programs.  The incumbent actively engages with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas, developing strong relationships and promoting the Library’s relevant services and collections. 

Actual assignments will be made based on the successful candidate’s experience and interests. 

This position works directly with students (graduate and undergraduate), faculty, researchers, other University staff and administrators, University alumni, and members of the public. 

With a second Science Liaison and Reference Librarian, the incumbent in this position develops collections housed in the Blommer Science Library and supports the students and faculty who use that library location primarily Blommer Science Library and is responsible for meeting the Information needs of users in at that location.  The position reports directly to the Head of Collections, Research and Instruction.

Requirements:

  • Masters in Library Science (MLS) accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in the sciences, math, statistics, computer science or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of or experience with information resources in the sciences, math, statistics and/or computer science
  • Two years minimum experience in the provision of public services (reference and instruction) in an academic or research library setting
  • Ability to work with diverse, research-oriented students and faculty

Other Skills: Successful performance requires analytical ability, initiative, imagination, and excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as a broad-based interest in and current awareness of information technology applications for the delivery of scientific information.
