Reports to: Associate Professor and Research Assistance Coordinator
Department: Learning, Research & Engagement and Public Services
Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 1:00pm-10:00pm
Pay Grade: 38, exempt

General Description:
The Assistant Librarian provides a high level of user support for research assistance and public services activities, working alongside personnel from Learning, Research & Engagement and Public Services.

These departments support teaching, research, and learning at the University by
• Providing general and discipline-specific research support to students and researchers at the Research Assistance Desk.
• Providing reference, information, and user services for those who visit in person or communicate by phone, via email, and through an online chat service.
• Offering classes and online tutorials on topics ranging from information literacy to training in discipline-based resources.

This position supports the Libraries’ mission by providing research and information expertise, primarily at the Research Assistance desk, during 2nd shift when librarians are usually not available (Sunday-Thursday 1pm-10pm and adjusted daytime schedule during intercessions). At the Research Assistance desk, this person performs complex searches for library materials and instructs users in formulating research strategies to locate, evaluate and use information resources. This person will work closely with the Public Services staff by assisting them in answering research questions, providing training in the use of information and research resources, and in handling basic Circulation activities on the 2nd shift. Working with Library users involves interacting with students, faculty, and staff from every department on campus. In addition, the Research Assistance Desk is frequently involved in instruction or programs that involve the University as well as external groups. The Assistant Librarian works with a high level of autonomy that does not require close supervision. This individual also contributes to the Libraries’ information literacy program through orientations, tours, and library instruction classes for lower division courses as needed. The position provides administrative support for the Research Services Coordinator and oversees the Research Assistance desk operations when the Coordinator is unavailable.

 

Qualifications

 Responsibilities / Duties:
• Provides research assistance and information service to users at the Research Assistance desk
o By answering questions both in-person and online via chat, text, and email
o By offering appointment-based consultations for undergraduates in general education classes.
• Assists users with Information Services, Circulation and other Public Services activities
• Creates and maintains general research guides and related public services web sites
• Teaches research and information skills to undergraduate students through orientations, tours, and user instruction classes for lower division courses
• Assists the Research Assistance Coordinator with
o Coordinating student work schedules
o Administering online reference services
o Compiling statistical reports
o Training students and staff to provide basic reference service
o Overseeing desk operations when the Coordinator is unavailable
• Contributes to departmental planning efforts
• Participates in professional development, library committees, departmental and library wide meetings, and planning activities

Required Qualifications:
• ALA-accredited master’s degree
• Knowledge of research strategies, resources, and services
• Experience working with the public
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Highly dependable and able to maintain regular work schedule
• Ability to adapt to a changing environment
• Comfortable with public speaking
• Experience with MS Office applications
• Self-motivated
• Detail-oriented

Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous reference or public services experience in an academic library
• Demonstrated experience using reference tools in the sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences
• Library instruction experience
• Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS
