Job Description

SCHEDULE:  Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

 PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to manage and direct day-to-day operations of the Technical Services Department. Duties include, but are not limited to, cataloging and overseeing original and copy cataloging of material, ensuring optimal operation of the bibliographic, authority and database, accuracy of the library’s online catalog of library holdings, supervising staff, planning and directing work, planning and conducting meetings, and performing additional tasks as assigned by the Collections and Access Services Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, handling employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; and makes hiring recommendations. Plans, organizes, supervises, and directs the work of the Technical Services Department which catalogs and processes library materials for all points of service with the exceptions of McClung and Archives; and submits departmental reports as required. Performs professional librarian duties including original and copy cataloging, database maintenance and authority control, and data extraction and data analysis. Makes recommendations for equipment, furniture, and supply needs for the Department during annual budgeting process. Controls the content and accuracy of the library’s online catalog of library holdings; assists with catalog database input and maintenance as necessary. Monitors, maintains and ensures optimal operation of the bibliographic and authority databases; maintains cataloging authority files to ensure correct catalog records. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in library technical services and communicates issues to the Collections and Access Services Manager and makes recommendations for enhancing library practice. Oversees and performs original and copy cataloging.  Maintains label program. Serves on committees and attends meetings as appropriate; plans and conducts intra-departmental meetings and serves on Library Committees and task groups as requested. Participates in discussions/decisions concerning Library recommended policies and procedures in Administrative Team.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Attends professional meetings and conferences to enhance job knowledge. Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university supplemented by six (6) years of progressively responsible supervisory and/or administrative experience involving library operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines and Library equipment, such as a microcomputer, printer, telephone, CD-ROM terminals, Library's automated system, and calculator.  Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
