Assistant Director, Media Relations-University of Tennessee System Office of Communications and Marketing

Pay Grade 41 - Salary Dependent on Experience and Qualifications

REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President/Director of Communications

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time/Exempt/Permanent

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The University of Tennessee System Office of Communications and Marketing seeks to hire an experienced communications/public relations professional as Assistant Director for Media Relations. Joining a small, but dynamic and innovative, team of communications and marketing professionals, the successful candidate would serve as one of two primary media contacts for the UT System. Also responsible for ongoing communications support and client management for specified System units, the individual in this position would work frequently with the division's vice president for communications and marketing and have regular exposure to other senior and executive leaders of the System, including the UT President.

Requiring superior writing and oral communications skills, this position also provides content and research support for a variety of System reports, publications and Websites, and assists in the preparation of press events and media interviews, Board of Trustees meetings and provides communications support for a broad range of special System projects and initiatives, including the System's strategic plan. The successful candidate must be an individual of high integrity and have an appreciation and understanding of the unique culture of higher education communications and marketing and an overall commitment to representing the interests of the University of Tennessee and its affiliated campuses and institutes. This position requires some professional travel and the ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are the primary professional duties and responsibilities associated with this position:

Work in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President/Director of Communications in managing media inquiries, prioritizing requests, and locating or providing access to appropriate personnel or information. Pitch story ideas to media, manage/distribute public notice postings and press releases.

Write, edit or assign, as appropriate, feature stories, media releases, and web content, and develop material in support of speaking engagements or public appearances by System leadership as needed.

Seek and develop opportunities to curate and re-purpose news coverage and in-house content via the System website and for special projects or in client service toward strategic objectives (including raising awareness and positive perceptions of UT's collective, statewide University).

Research varied sources of published news about UT, compile and distribute a daily news roundup to Trustees/president's staff.

Regularly engage in communications and marketing strategy sessions and professional development activities that enhance creative ideas, professional skills and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the office.

Other duties as assigned by the assistant vice president/director of communications and the vice president for communications and marketing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, public relations or related field. Master's degree preferred.

Experience: Five to seven years' experience in public relations/affairs, media relations, news media/print journalism, communications, marketing or related field.

Experience placing stories in national, regional and local media, and a proven record of successfully working with and cultivating effective relationships with media professionals

Experience problem-solving, multi-tasking, and producing quality work under deadline pressure.

Demonstrated news judgment.

Proven knowledge of issues and crises management.

Professional communications or public relations experience in a higher education, large non-profit or corporate setting preferred.
