The 17th annual Engineering Cookout was a huge success

The Office of Engineering Professional Practice recently held its seventeenth annual welcome back cookout on Friday, August 28. This was the largest yet, with more than 1,400 participants.

Office director Todd Reeves kicked off the event with the help of College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis and UT quarterback and aerospace engineering student Joshua Dobbs. According to Reeves, the idea behind the cookout is threefold: to welcome students back to campus in a fun way, to introduce them to his office, and to offer companies and students a chance to visit with one another.

"Our annual cookout is sort of the unofficial start company recruiting activities here during the fall semester," said Reeves. "Having multiple companies support and attend this event gives our engineering students an opportunity to get a head start on learning about co-op and internship opportunities that can be available to them during their career at UT."

This year's event was supported and attended by nine companies: Altec, DENSO, Duke Energy, Eastman Chemical, Garmin, International Paper, MAHLE, Shaw Industries, and Southern Company.

Also, please follow us on Twitter<https://twitter.com/UTprofpractice> and Instagram<https://instagram.com/UTEngrProfessionalPractice> for updates on our co-op and internship program.

Featured Student: Joshua Dobbs

[Joshua Dobbs]Normally, we feature students who are on co-op assignments, but Joshua Dobbs' internship this past summer was extraordinary. For a student-athlete with a demanding summer schedule to be able to work in even an abbreviated internship speaks volumes about his desire to gain real-world engineering experience. This type of experience is readily available to all of our engineering students.

Josh spent his internship experience with Pratt and Whitney, one of the world's leading jet and rocket engine manufacturers, something he said was beneficial to his future studies and life after college and football.

"The most valuable benefits I received were the firsthand experience gained in engine systems analysis and the connections I made at Pratt and Whitney," said Dobbs. "I met engineers from each division of the company who gave me their personal insight into the importance of their divisions."

Josh was assigned to work in the System Engineering and Validation Department. There, he helped test and analyze data on the F135 engine that powers the military's new F-35 fighter jet. Read more >><http://tntoday.utk.edu/2015/09/02/dobbs-coop-experience-stressed-importance-teamwork/>
