As a Librarian within the Reston Library, some of your specific duties will include:

- Cataloging of cartographic materials in all physical formats
- Classification of new cartographic materials using the Library's unique classification scheme
- Online cataloging of records
- Reviewing the work of library technicians
- Assisting personnel with cataloging cartographic materials

USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. The official worksite for the selectee is the duty location identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this location on a regular and recurring basis.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
All librarians must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education as shown for GS-7; however, as a standard practice applicants enter at grade GS-9 on the basis of a master's degree in library science.

Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Librarian, all grade levels.

A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
**OR
B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
Additional Education and Experience for Positions at GS-9 and above.
In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have directly related education and/or specialized experience in the amounts required for the grade level as shown in the following.
GS-9: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position. 1 year equivalent to at least GS-7.
GS-11: 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in library science or doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) related to the position
1 year equivalent to at least GS-9.

Examples of such experience may include: Ability to catalog maps and geospatial products using established professional standards. Ability to apply knowledge of bioliographic control. Ability to interpret and apply cataloging and classification standards and protocols. Ability to apply knowledge of cartographic concepts, practices, and collections. Ability to communicate in writing.
