The joint UT-Y12 Lithium Indium Diselenide Thermal Neutron Imager (LTNI) project includes assistant professor Dr. Eric Lukosi and Y-12 joint assistant professor Dr. Ashley Stowe, both of nuclear engineering, while the joint UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Universal Grid Monitoring and Analyzing System (UGMAS) includes Governor’s Chair Dr. Yilu Liu, research assistant professor Dr. Yong Liu, and Lingwei Zhan of electrical engineering and computer science. The facility is directed by Dr. Eric Lukosi, Department of Nuclear Engineering. Other UT affiliated authors include Dr. Yanwen Zhang and materials graduate student Haizhou Xue. The paper is titled "Ionization-induced annealing of pre-existing defects in silicon carbide." Read more<http://www.nature.com/ncomms/2015/150812/ncomms9049/full/ncomms9049.html> [Joseph Sangoro] Engineers Improving Safety, Reliability of Batteries<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_21_15.html#> The next big step forward in the quest for sustainable, more efficient energy is tantalizingly within reach thanks to research being led by UT’s Dr. Joshua Sangoro, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He heads a group devoted to the study of soft materials—substances that can be manipulated while at room temperature, including liquids, polymers, and foams. Berry] Berry to Give Keynote at Conference<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_21_15.html#> Dr. Michael W. Berry will give a keynote presentation at the International Conference on Soft Computing in Data Science, Sept 2-3, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In addition, he will give a workshop on data visualization and numerical analysis using Python the day before the conference. Berry is a co-editor of the conference proceedings that will be published by Springer in their "Communications in Computer and Information Science" series. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy seeks outstanding University of Tennessee Juniors for annual appointments as Baker Scholars. An information session will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, at the Baker Center. The Baker Scholar program is intended to enrich a student's college experience by engaging them in a research project related to some element of public policy, governance or public service. Applicants must have at least one year left at UT, in order to have time to complete a project and will enroll in two one- hour seminars to assist in their research. Read more<http://bakercenter.utk.edu/2015/08/19/baker-scholar-applications-available-online-deadline-sept-16-2014/> Student News and Opportunity [Jason Howison] MABE Alum Joins Citadel Faculty<http://www.engr.utk.edu/news/atcoe/atcoe_08_21_15.html#> This month, COE alumnus Jason Howison will begin his second year as assistant professor at The Citadel, which was named the top public college in the south by U.S. News and World Report. Howison graduated from the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE). The mechanical engineering program at The Citadel was started two years ago, so Howison will have the opportunity to influence the direction and appearance of the program. He will be teaching thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer as well as aerospace electives such as aerodynamics and propulsion. Howison received his BS in mechanical engineering from Clemson University, his MS in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia, and his PhD in aerospace engineering from UT. While a PhD student in the MABE department, Howison's advisor was associate professor Dr. Kivanc Ekici. The center is excited to showcase its beautiful new space to academic partners. August 31 is set aside specifically for COE faculty and staff. Drop by between 7:45 and 9:00 a.m. to tour the facility, visit with staff and grab a coffee and pastry. The center is located on Level 2 in Suite 201. Part of the Global Grand Challenges Summit, six teams from each of those countries are working to develop a technology that helps answer one the “Grand Challenges for Engineering”—a list of fourteen issues that engineers feel pose the biggest threat in the twenty-first century. The competition challenges both individuals and teams of undergraduate and graduate students working under the guidance of a faculty advisor to address issues currently facing airports and the National Airspace System. Student winners earn cash prizes and for first place design submissions, the opportunity to present at a professional venue and to receive this award at a Ceremony at the National Academies in Washington, DC.
