Hu Leads
Efforts to Invent a New Manufacturing Technique for Microball Lens
Two Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) faculty members have joined forces with Beijing
University of Technology in China to invent an innovative manufacturing technique for a microball lens using a femtosecond fiber laser. Assistant
Professor Anming Hu led the group effort — working closely with Magnavox Professor Kenneth Kihm and Dr. Tao Chen at Beijing University of Technology. Their technique is much more facile and less expensive compared to previous methods. These micro lenses and
micro lens array are key optic components for micro-optics systems, wide angle/stereo imaging (compound eyes), and super-resolution imaging. The
work was recently published in Small, a highly-rated Wiley academic journal.
