Vehicle Inventory Use Survey Listening Session
Thursday, August 6, 2015, 1:00 PM EDT - 3:30 PM EDT

Planning efforts are underway to restore the Vehicle Inventory and User Survey (VIUS). A Public Listening Session will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET to gather stakeholder input. The VIUS is the principal data source on the physical and operational characteristics of the U.S. truck population at the state and national level. It was first conducted in 1963 and thereafter every five years from 1967 to 2002. Since the VIUS was discontinued after the 2002 survey, industry and policy makers have not had timely and accurate data upon which to represent current characteristics and travel behavior of trucks operating in the United States. The VIUS data supported a wide range of public and private transportation decisions and provided critical information on safety analyses and risks, fuel consumption, economic productivity, and environmental impacts of transportation. Since the survey was discontinued, there has been very little information on the characteristics and activities of trucks in the United States, so efforts are underway to plan for the restoration of the VIUS. The Federal Highway Administration, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Department of Energy, and the United States Department of Agriculture are funding a study to design and scope a new VIUS, possibly utilizing new forms of survey technologies.

The Public Listening Session is your opportunity to provide input on how you used VIUS data, which survey elements are essential to your future data and policy needs, and which elements you think need to be added or deleted from the questionnaire. If you would like to review the questions from the 2002 survey prior to the Listening Session, go to http://www.census.gov/svsd/www/vius/questionnaires.html.
