Description: Freight rail safety has become an increasingly visible topic in recent years due to some notable incidents on the U.S. and North American rail system, particularly with regard to oil shipments and derailments. Despite these high-profile incidents, freight rail has become an increasing safer mode of transportation since the industry was deregulated in 1980, with a decreasing number of accidents on a per ton mile basis. Freight rail safety encompasses a broad array of safety measures instituted by both government agencies and railroad carriers, including track rail car maintenance and monitoring using technologically advanced inspection equipment, at-grade crossing safety measures and maintenance, anti-trespassing initiatives, Positive Train Control, improved rail car construction standards, rigorous employee safety training, and emergency planning coordination between railroad carriers and federal, state, and local agencies, among other initiatives. For both government agencies and rail carriers themselves, rail safety is a top priority initiative - with government agencies to meet their goal of maintaining and preserving the public good, and with rail carriers to maintain and preserve customer and public trust and ensure the carriers' continued business viability.

This webinar will discuss different safety initiatives that have been and are being implemented by both the federal government and the freight railroad industry to address recent safety concerns and ensure the U.S. freight railroad transportation system can operate in a safe and efficient manner.
