The IU Bloomington Libraries are seeking an innovative and service oriented individual for the position of Sciences Librarian (Health Sciences) at the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries.  Reporting to the Head of the Sciences Department, the successful candidate will join a dedicated and diverse team of librarians and help shape the future of Science librarianship at Indiana University.  Collection development responsibilities may include areas relevant to medicine, nursing, vision/optometry, health, and life sciences. This position provides an ideal learning environment for new library school graduates or early-career librarians to develop general reference, collection development, teaching, and subject librarian experience.  This position will be responsible for outreach in areas such as consumer health outreach, health literacy, scholarly communication, compliance with public access policy mandates (such as NIH), and preservation and access to scholarly outputs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as liaison to assigned academic departments and develop collection development expertise therein.
  • Experiment with new approaches and effective models needed for delivery of library services remotely and face to face.
  • Develop and manage relationships and explore and maximize partnerships with academic departments.
  • Maintain awareness of research practices and teaching needs of faculty in the Sciences.
  • Develop and deliver innovative online and face-to-face information literacy instruction.
  • Contribute to academic course development by providing teaching consultation and support for faculty and instructors.
  • Provide research consultations and support to faculty, students, and staff.
  • Provide reference services and consultation hours in the libraries as well as the academic departments.
  • Manage collections to maximize space, usability, and teaching and research support.
  • Maintain knowledge of information sources/platforms and vendors in the Sciences.
  • Participate in planning, organization, implementation, and direction of public services for the Sciences Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Required

  • ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science; candidates with an advanced degree in a relevant subject area and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered.
  • Familiarity/experience with scholarly communication issues, such as:  NIH Public Access Policy and other directives stemming from the US Office of Science and Technology Policy; non-traditional publishing such as open access journals and digital edition ebooks; intellectual property issues including copyright and patents
  • Familiarity with structure and organization of scientific literature and knowledge of health and life sciences databases, such as: PubMed and others from NCBI, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, VisionNet, and BIOSIS.
  • Experience and willingness to learn new and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and build working relationships with campus colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well with diverse population of faculty, students, and academic colleagues
  • Strong public service orientation.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track librarian position.

 Preferred

  • Advanced degree in health sciences or related field, or membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
  • Teaching experience.
