Head of Collection Development

Marx Library, University of South Alabama

The Marx Library of the University of South Alabama seeks a Head of Collection Development. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean, this position will oversee the collection development and management of resources in all formats, monitor the library’s collection budget, provide leadership and support for library liaisons and faculty, review and monitor licenses for electronic resources, supervise acquisitions personnel, and coordinate the library’s gift materials program.

Specific Responsibilities:
•         Manage materials budget
•         Oversee the selection, ordering, and receiving of materials
•         Negotiate license agreements
•         Evaluate current collection and gift materials
•         Manage a DDA program (demand-driven acquisitions)
•         Provide assessment reports on library resources for university programs
•         Provide other reports as needed
•         Develop collection development policies and procedures
•         Determine subject allocations
•         Coordinate subject bibliographers
•         Supervise acquisitions staff

Required Qualifications:

•         An ALA-accredited MLS/MIS/MLIS

•         Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries

•         Aptitude for complex, analytical work with an attention to detail

•         Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines

•         Communicate effectively,  both orally and in writing

•         Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a congenial team environment

•         Strong organizational skills

•         Demonstrated interest in professional development

Preferred Qualifications:

•         At least ten years of relevant experience in an academic or research library

•         Experience assessing and negotiating licenses for electronic resources

•         Knowledge of integrated library systems

•         Supervisory experience


This is a twelve-month, tenure-track library faculty appointment at the Associate Librarian rank with an estimated start date of June 2015.
