The Peer-to-Peer Exchange Program is designed to share global best practice cases and real world examples of sustainable urban freight systems. This
program is open to anyone with a professional or a personal interest in freight transportation issues. Professional Development Hours will be provided to those interested.
Performance based standards (PBS) is a flexible non-prescriptive framework for regulating the weight and dimensions as well as network access of road freight vehicles. Within this framework, a range of generic multi-combination vehicles termed, High Performance
Freight Vehicles (HPFVs) have been permitted to operate within urban areas in Australian cities. Access has been granted for HPFVs carrying cubic (lightweight) freight up to 68.5 tonnes on high quality duplicated urban roads. B Double vehicles, 25 metres in
length, 9 axle configurations operating at 62.5 tonnes (68 tonnes with mass management accreditation) GVM that can carry both a 40 foot and a 20 foot shipper container are now permitted to use most urban arterial roads.
This webinar will provide an overview of experiences in PBS and HPFVs in Australian cities. The productivity benefits of PBS rigid vehicles as well as
port container movements will be presented. The safety performance of HPFVs as well as first and last mile access will be provided. Issues associated with infrastructure management as well as community acceptance will be also described.
